I killed this hog today at noon. This is the very first sucessful stalk hunt I have ever had. I walked up to within 6 feet of this boar, and he was asleep. He never heard me or smelled me. I killed him in Freestone county 20 miles east of Fairfield.

All of the hogs on my place look like this one. To me they are shaped like those hogs in Africa that are slender with razor backs. I have one seen a "round" one as I call them hog on a game camera at my place. The meat on these hogs is purple like venison. Any idea on the type of hog this is?
Thanks for looking

Congrats on the hog Tommy...as to what type of hog?? A dead one.. Laughing
I've seen a lot of the hogs with great muscular profiles thinking this must be a big boar...only to have them step farther out of the brush to see a dangling milk factory attached.. Shocked
The other shorter bodied pigs that appear more round as you describe, are just not far from being released farm hogs.. Rolling Eyes

And all this time I have been believing all our round hawgs are due to our feeding program. When We see oval hawgs we know it is a new group moving in. Wink

That boar in the pic sure has one LONG snout!!! Congrats on the successful stalk and harvest! I am certain you are hooked now.

Do you have any more pics of that hawg? I hope so, but with that credit card turned face up. Laughing

Dave

Thanks Bill!!!

Dave, I put that there to kind of give an idea to the size Laughing

His snout is long, and every hog I have killed or seen out here looks like that and is black.

Longer snout means a more dominant Russian strain of genetics or true wild boar genetics.

Shorter snout = more dominant domestic genetics.

Coincidentally, did you notice if it had what I call a milk tooth?

http://www.texasboars.com/articles/aging.html

The first photo shows it.

Every hog that I have ever taken has this tooth and am wondering if anyone has ever dropped one that did NOT have it.

Quick reference estimate of a hog's weight.

Formula used to estimate:

Heart girth is measured in inches using a cloth measuring tape. The tape is placed directly behind the front legs,
wrapped snugly around the heart girth, and read directly behind the shoulders.

pig weight = 10.1709 x Heart girth (inches) minus 205.7492.

Found to be 95% accurate to within 10 lbs

Using the above formula, we get the following:

40 inch = 200 pounds
42 inch = 220 pounds
43 inch = 230 pounds
44 inch = 240 pounds
45 inch = 250 pounds
-------------------------------
46 inch = 260 pounds
47 inch = 270 pounds
48 inch = 280 pounds
49 inch = 290 pounds
-----------------------------
50 inch = 300 pounds
51 inch = 310 pounds

55 inch needed to get around 350 pounds

I remembered that method, but I didnt have anything handy even a string to wrap around him and measure later.

Heck. Well, it can be very hard to guess a weight from photos.

From the pictures which is a hard estimate I would say 150-180 lbs.

That is just way cool Woodsman!

I have spent many summer hours trying to sneak up on one in the bogs of the old oxbow on my property. I always get busted...usually before I even see them.

I stalked one in a big wallow at our pond 2 yrs ago in 98 degree heat! The unlucky boar never saw or smelled me. I heard him shake his ears & had been looking for him for over a year. Luckily I spotted an ear sticking up & barely a shoulder above the mud. 2 quick AR 223 shots through the shoulder & into the heart. He never moved. Had some real nice cutters, probably about a 3 yr old, 220 lb. Still the best set of cutters I've gotten in 4 yrs on our place. Now that I have read the tooth article I gotta look at them again!
