|
|
Last year I decided was the year of the 30-06 for me.
I bought a 500 165 gr Accubond seconds from Shooters Pro shop for a good price and set about load development.
RP-Cases (New)
165 gr Accubond (2nds)
CCI-200 LR Primer
48.5 grs of Jeff Bartlett Russian 4895 (Burns like 4064)
Chrono data, average was 2704 fps out of my essentially new M1 Garand from the CMP
I killed 6 deer with this load from 35yds to 150 yds. Penetration was complete on all deer taken, most through both shoulders.
Expansion was very rapid at the entrance wound. If I was using a regular cup and core bullet I would say the bullet was coming apart.
Exits were large but lacking in extreme blood shot areas indicating good bullet weight retention but a lot of energy was shed in the deer.
I never saw bits and pieces of lead or jacket, the bullet was obviously staying together.
I was very impressed with this bullet @ 2700 FPS, all deer reacted strongly to being hit and those that staggered off left a good blood trail.
Did not see a hog to ventilate but I am sure this load would have made pork chops out of any pig.
Here is a picture of a doe killed with my Remington, the exit hole under the hide is much bigger. this was through both shoulders at 100 yds
Here is a yearling shot at 100 yds with my Drilling
This nice buck was taken at 35 yds with the drilling

A doe shot at 65 yds with the drilling

Another yearling with the drilling
The drilling strikes one more time

This wound was typical of the entrance wound of the accubond bullet

I was hunting a new place and it is very thick with large stretches of woods and swamp, my time on target was short, so I went for the big kill zone. As it was we had enough to butcher!
I was very pleased with this bullet at this velocity, I do not know what it will do out of a 300 magnum, but plan to find out. I have some 150 gr accubonds and some more of the 165 grs, all seconds, but they should work fine. |

That drilling is extra nice! What gauge are the shotgun barrels?
The last hog I shot was with a .30-06 (pre-64 Winchester Model 70) shooting Federal Fusion 150gr. Killed him just as dead with one shots as it kills deer. |

It is a Kreighoff 12x12x30-06 The shot chambers are 2 3/4" The left barel is regulated with Breneke slugs to 50 yds. I have only killed small game with the shot bbls as the 30-06 kills all that has come before it.
Some day I should get some european 30-30 inserts for the shot bbls, but Drillings eat money like a baby does milk!
That scope and mount come on and off easy and returns to zero every time. Heck, I carry the thing to the stand in its bag in three pieces then assemble it in the stand. The rifle trigger is able to be set but it is too light for me, unset it trips at 3lbs or so. |

| Do you mind if I ask where you got those bullets from? I usually find them on Midwayusa. |

I keep my eye on the Shooters Pro Shop, they sell Nosler seconds and over runs. The Accubonds and Partitions are the best deal.

Buy a bunch when the price is right. |

Don't suppose anyone would have a good recipe for the 165gr Accubond in the 300Blackout??
I built another with a 1-11" twist and want to hop up a round for non-suppressed use..

Bill, what velocity will you be running? I am not familiar with this cartridge. |

Looking to achieve 1800+ Fps...I know it's too low for the 165gr, but mine are actually SST's and were for my 300Win Mag, and still have 150 or more left.
If the velocity could go higher, I could go for that also...I also have a 1-8" twist 300 Blk that works great with the 208gr AMAX subsonic and suppressed.
I want the 165gr for full power loads..I also have lighter projectiles, but prefer to use heavier if possible. I have a load not tried yet with 15.6gr H110, but always like to try other powders as well..

| At that velocity, a good 30-30 170 gr Round nose or flat nose would be good for you. They are designed for 1800 to 2100 fps. Any of the name brands would be good. Also a cast bullet with a gas check might work as well, but the 30-30 projectile seems to match what you want. |

| Might also look into the Flex Tip bullets by Hornady. They should open up pretty well at lower velocities. |

| At the velocities stated either a 30-30 150 gr or 170 gr roundnose or flat nosed bullet will be the best choice. They were designed to stabilize and expand at these velocities. The 30-30 has been running these speeds for 100 years or so and the bullets are well engineered for it. No reason to re-invent the wheel here. (Not putting the flex tip down, I am sure it is a good bullet) |

| That's cool. I just threw that in because the leverevolution bullets were designed to work in lever actions and their velocities, which are similar to the 300 blackout. The only real advantage is a higher ballistic coefficient for longer ranges and should cycle a little better through a semi auto. Just another option........... |
