|

I was disassembling my New Frontier lower from a 300 Blackout upper and ... the front pin popped out. Of course, the spring and retainer flew off into Never-land. And, I don't have Michael Jackson's new contact number.
After a search, I found the retainer pin. SEVERAL tries later, without any tools, I got it all back together.
I will be building a tool for assembling lowers.

what front pin? the front takedown pin the pins the upper and lower together?
if that was the case, how? it has a detent and spring, what retainer? you mean detent pin and not retainer? those should never be able to come apart, are you sure you have the right spring in there? |

It was the detent that flew to Neverland David. The spring remained in the lower and the takedown pin was clutched by my thumb and first finger on my right hand.
It must be the right spring because it was on the right side of the receiver. And, it was a factory assembled receiver. Yes, I agree it should have never come out.(insert large sarcasm Emoticon here please.)
I guess this shows how in a land of freedom and prosperity how things can change. Even a detent pin cannot be expected to remain captive forever.
This should encourage me to build the proper tool to reinstall or, install for the first time, that pesky spring and detent.
It took so many times reinserting the detent and pin, and loosing control of them, before I got it all together I felt like I was doing a old WindowsOS install.
BTW, the detent and pins on the New Frontier and the pins on the PlumCrazy lower receivers are composite. The triggers and hammers are composite on on the New Frontier and appear to be on the PlumCrazy. as well as any other parts I have had out. Except the buffer and springs. It appears the buffer and springs are of some antique material. But, they seem to work.
I've got probably 1000 rounds on composite lowers and, other than this odd incident, have had no problems.

still, out of how many AR's I have built and how many I own, I have never seen that happen.
For installation, run down to the local hardware store and get a clevis pin the correct side like the takedown pin, this way you can shove it through from the other side until the first hole lines up with the hole for the detent and spring, use a small punch or something that will fit through the hole in the clevis pin, drop in the spring, then detent, push it in with the punch, start to rotate the clevis pin until there is pressure against the punch, remove the punch slowly while still applying pressure against the punch to keep the detent and spring in there, you will get to the point the punch pulls out and you can rotate the clevis pin 90 degrees and it held the detent and spring in place, then follow it through with the take down pin, with your thumb or whatever on top of the takedown pin and it will replace the clevis pin and push it through

Frank,
I have two PlumCrazy lowers and two New Frontier lowers. As they have not reproduced, I am assuming they are sterile ....
Honestly, I don't know if they are first or second generation. I do like the triggers on either one.
Please note none of the receivers is on what I would call a round that has recoil. I have the two PlumCrazy lowers on 5.56 X 45 uppers with one of them being a bull barrel upper. One of the New Frontier receivers is on a .300 Blackout that weighs a bit over 6 pounds. Still, a rifle that has a recoil more like a pellet gun than an elephant gun.
I'll be sure and report ANY problems with these newfangled-spaceage-plastic lowers as I hate folks wasting money on worthless things ... like our government. (OOPS, did that get out?)

I can't remember the date I saw when they changed, but the trigger and added strength to the polymer are the main changes to the Frontier GenII. I am going to use it w a 5.56 so should not be a problem...sorta scared to use it for a 6.8 but may try it for grins. I need a cheap light weight 5.56 upper if you find one! flat top for optics.
Keep me informed please. |
