I am so excited i got my old town saranac 146 i chose red all the reviews were great on this canoe. This is going to open the doors for some great hunting that can only be accessed by boat. now i can jump on the angeling and go a mile down stream and get on the 400 acre old river tract section of alazan Bayou lots of hogs and deer. then i can go down river and hit an excellent area of big slough WMA which is only accesible by boat. I almost bought the Guide 147 but oit had more of a keel to it. i thought my first canoe should be a flatbottom type. i wanted stability over treking ability at this point

here she is

I'd think it would be best if you had a trailer to haul it on. Short of that, build you a cab over rack for it. (if it's lte enough for you to lift into position alone.) Or as Marty stated, tie it in the bed of your truck, being sure to flag, or light, the end of your canoe that sticks out past the trucks bed. No matter what you do, just be sure that its SECURELY tied down! C'ya Very Happy

Howie, my buddy puts his Old Town on top because he has a camper. Contact them and ask rather than take our word for it.

i mjust took my canoe out to a pond where ive hunted at, and did some fishing caught quite a few bass, nothing to brag about. i i bought some cam activated straps and strapped the canoe on inside of truck with tail gate down. the canoe was easy to carry alone.
instead if sitting in the stern i got in the middle to seat to fish and trek around the pond learned alot in my first day using it
im gonna practice a little more before taking it down the river

view while in canoe

first little bass out of canoe

small teeny tiny bass out of pond caughtquite a few using a watermelon seed super fluke

That's a whopper. I like to fish in the pond too rather than the lake, seems I catch more, small ones but still more fish, that keeps it fun.
Nice canoe by the way.

haha i should have mounted the one the size of the super fluke i was using lol. i have no idea how that smaller one got on a 3/0 hool guess thats why they call them large mouth. i found while fishing it worked best if i got in the middle bench seat when i sat at the stern was like i was driving a low rider ., im going to have to come up with a mount to where i can put my camera to get some good quality pictures when i catch them those pictures were kind of cheesy because i had to put my digital on top of my worm bag and set the time every time i moved the camera would fall off

O.K. Howie, now go to S10's post and his redfish pic. Thats the size fish your suppose to be trying to catch. Laughing But don't head 12 miles out from the coast in your canoe just yet. 'Cause I bet the boat he was on, was just a tad bigger than yours. Laughing C'ya Very Happy

Howie, if you experiment a little you can have some fun figuring out the different paddling techniques that work well for you. I like paddling from the stern seat, and using J strokes. But, other strokes work really well too. I also find it easier to steer the canoe from the stern seat. It's great fun though trying out different ways to paddle them. After a while you'll see which is best for you, and easiest for you to really get it going through the water. Me and my crew enjoy racing each other. Sometimes it's guy's against the girls, and sometimes momma takes the fella's and whips me and Michelle. Laughing

i did a little yesterday im a stocky guy so when i got in the stern position at launch i about threw myself in the water. i did paddle in the stern position, it was real easier since the center of the boat is sturder that is where i fished from, im looking at my second canoe think im going to get the 147 guide by oldtown i almost bought that one but think im gonna use the saranc 146 as a family friend lesure and do my hunting out of the other

Yea, sometimes the different features of each lend themselves better to different adventures. The Alagash's that we bought really work well for our camping and fishing needs. They have a huge amount of capacity and room in them. Like I was telling you before, I have had my ENTIRE family of five in one canoe and zipped around the lake at Huntsville state park using a trolling motor. It was a blast.

Our canoes are pretty stable. But, they will tip if you work at it a little. We have lots of fun having splash wars on the lake. There's been plenty of times I'd get my crew back to shore and we'd have more water in the canoe than in the lake. Laughing

reading on my mine is kind of the best of both worlds was designed with low sides and narrow for treking and a flat bottom for more initial stability, at this point im not worried about paddling fast id rather have an all around canoe mine is only 14-6 and i already established if you want to turn left its faster to put paddle on left and paddle backwards it urns alot fast that way then putting paddle on the right and paddling.

as stated i will eventulay get the guide 147 has a little better keel and holds more capacity. ive alwasy wanted a boat and a canoe is the cheapest route for me that i can travel rivers inshore lakes and ponds and yet still carry enough gear for a week long excursion or from moving ladders stands and game cart on the Alazan bayou WMA. i bought a life jacket so now im prop going to the neches or angelina and just paddle down and attempt to come back up, i tied a good rope on and will put a back pack saw in canoe in case of any obstacles have to cut drag around etc. ive done alot of reading before i made my purchase. your advice helped me pick the best canoe for my needs in my opinion. ill get a bigger better one later on

Glad I could help Howie. It was great talking with you about them. We really do enjoy ours. It is one of the few fun things we can do down here that doesn't cost anything at all to do. Wink

I am not surprised that Academy sells more Old Town canoes than other brands. If you take a look at the construction of the OT's they are built much sturdier, and with better quality materials. Once you get into canoeing Howie it just opens up all kinds of possibilities for recreation.

If you really want a nice, LIGHT WEIGHT canoe, check out OT's canoes made from Royalex. They are extremely light weight. My canoe weights about 80lbs. A model similar to mine made from Royalex weights about 56lbs. Thats a pretty significant weight reduction. And the best part is the weight capacity stays the same. But those models are quite a bit more expensive. And they would probably have to be ordered. When I got mine I had to have them shipped into Houston. It was no big deal and went smooth.

Howie, Just remember not to paddle under the low trees along the bank, or you will have unwanted guests dropping in the canoe with you.

I had a canoe a few years back and used it at the Richland Creek WMA during the black powder hog hunt in the spring and the place was loaded with cottonmouths, counted 75 poisonous snakes before I saw one that wasn't.

Howie,

Try looking on Craigslist for an inexspensive set of ladder racks for trucks. I got this set for $70 and it allows me to transport my canoe and still have the bed of the truck available for other gear.

I modified a length of 6" pvc pipe to use as a rod holder to keep my eyelets and reels from getting damaged during trips. Pics were prior to adding the pipe rod holder but give you and idea of what is possible.

For reference, that canoe is 14'-6"

These pontoons are awesome when the canoe is loaded up. It is nearly impossible to to tip it over once they are deployed. They are adjustable for length and height.
