I have shot a 7 magnum for 30 years,8 elk no telling how many white tail,a few hogs and most have been 1 shot kills.I have always used 150 grain factory ammo,o yea and a Leopold scope. Its reliable as all get out.Now I just inherited a Winchester Model 70 270 that shoots great I would not be afraid to hunt hogs, deer or even Elk with it. If you do get a 7 mag don't shoot it so much that it hurts your shoulder and you get to flinching,it is a big gun and can cause a litttle shoulder pain.I never feel it on game. I also don't have to shoot it off a bench much cause I know its going to hit where I am aiming. I love to hog hunt.Good luck Chuck

Well I don't have eithera. I'm eventually going to go elk hunting but that's way down the road. All the hunting I do is in east Texas for deer and hogs

Both those rounds are high speed and flat shooting.
If you are gonna be shooting 200 yards or more, good ideas.
But since it's east Texas, are you going to have long shots ?

The .308 Winchester and the .30-06 are a couple of more good choices...and
they have a fair amount of reach too. Most anything will work, given
good shot placement and decent bullets.

ill use my 3030 for short distances and there's places I hunt where figuratively speaking if I could do it there is over 700 yard shots. But I'm not that good. Lol

The question you should ask yourself then, is how far do you feel comfortable
shooting ? Here again, if it's not much over 200 yards, is there any
real advantage to using the 7mm Magnum for example ?
More recoil can make it harder to shoot well for many people also.

I'm comfortable with 300 yards with real good bracing. I'm a big Guy recoil don't bother me. So a 270 is good enough for hogs? If so that's what I'm going to get

I love my 7 mag even though since we hunt at night for hogs I do not use it for that any more. It is a great shooting gun and will drop about anything I shoot with it.

I use a 270 and love it. I also shoot a weatherby 270 magnum and love it. I have not had a hog walk away from either one. I use the Barnes bullets in both.

Well, looks like another one of the classic debates in the end here.
Almost like Ford verses Chevy.......270 verses 7mm Mag.
If you don't reload, most .270 ammo will probably cost a bit less than
most 7mm Mag ammo....assuming ammo cost is a factor for you.

Yea its a factor. If a 270 is adequate at killing hogs that is what ill get. About what distance are they good for hogs. 200 yards with a 150 grain bullet

You can go up a little in bullet weight from there. To about 180 grain I think. Should be fine to 200 yards if they bullets are working well with the rifle. A 200 yard shot in low light with skittish pigs is going to be challenging for sure. Wink

I haven't shot a hog with either of my .270's, but my son popped one last deer season with my new Model 70 Winchester .270. Using 130 gr Federal Fusions, he hit it just behind the should at about 80 yards and it dropped in it's tracks. I don't own a 7 mm Mag, but I shot a big sow with my .300 Win Mag and she also dropped where she stood. There really doesn't seem to be that much advantage in the 7 Mag over the .270 to me, except a little more bullet weight, and i don't know if that makes up for the extra recoil. My admittedly limited experience on deer and hogs with a .270 has resulted in one shot kills each time. Since most of my hogs are shot at close range, I like the .44 Mag carbine and my old .300 Savage Model 99 best.

I thought about a 300 win may or a 338 may. But I decided I wanted to deer hunt with it and not already have the deer cleaned skinned and quarter just by shooting it. Lol

When I shot that 180# sow with the .300 Win Mag and 130gr Barnes TTSX, it knocked the wind out of her sails right now! Really a lot of gun for hogs and deer, though.

Normally we could get Texas boars gun guru to chime in (Big Bore Burt), but alas he has anything less than .308 dia on his ignore list. He starts perking up when we get to .375 dia or so. I think he stirs his coffe with a .375 H&H cartridge!

Plain dead hogs is all the small bores will do, we need real dead or deader than dead discussions to get Burt fired up! Laughing

But since you seem stuck on small bore bullets, I assure you the 150gr bullet in either case will make all boars just plain dead out to 400yds or so.

The last 2 hogs I shot were with the wife's .308 Win and 130 grain Barnes TSX
bullets, but I'll never tell you all that. Err.....whoops ! Razz Laughing Laughing
And the 6.5 X 55 ? Never saw one. < Hiding rifle behind back >
.375 H & H to stir coffee ? Too short, use a 9.3 X 74R for that... Cool
( Overall length 3.74 inches )

Arrow weight ? So ? A .458 Win Mag, or a .458 Lott can toss 500s all day, and there
are a few heavier cast bullets too. And all of those are moving faster
than that arrow. Laughing
( Just giving you a hard time, hehe )

they all kill fine
the 7mm's bullets have a higher BC and better for long range
if you don't reload, take a look at what has more ammo readily available readily

a 308 would be a good option as well of course, or an 06, or... or.. Smile

This of course is just one mans opinion but I'll take a 270 with 150 grain Remington corelocks and hunt anything in this country. I shoot 30-06 which theres not a nickels worth of difference between it and a 270, and I also shoot a 300 win mag. I like my 270 and have for 20 years. With good shot placement you don't have to hunt him.

I don't think anyone can argue with that statement
confidence and being able to put the bullet where it's supposed to go sure trumps everything else

For my use, I'd rather have a 7mm-08. Straight shooting caliber, plenty of stopping power, flat shooting, low recoil.

YMMV Very Happy

There is no replacement for the 30-06/308, good enough for snipers good enough for me. Unless you are a girl Smile , why bother with the smaller bores? I am with Burt on this, do you use an adequate caliber or one that has impact power that will never let you down.

For short distances and stalking I use the light weight Ruger 44 carbine 240-300gr and for over 150 yds I use a .308, it never occurs to me to wonder if the round will do the job, it just does.

The last 7 hogs I took out were with a .30-06, and 110 grain Barnes TTSX bullets.
3,300 feet per second starting speed. Twisted Evil
Shots from 30 to 175 yards, worked well.
Still, they would be more dead with a magnum..... Laughing

( In case you all ain't figured it out yet, I use all kinds of stuff at one time
or another. )

Burt, I use the 180gr Core Lokt's in my 308...That 110 gr out of a 30-06 makes the recoil like a 270 right? So in my .038 I could reduce the grain and pick up speed thus reducing recoil? Thanks for your input.
