|
|
Many years ago my now deceased Grandfather became a gunsmith, his gun collection and smithing equipment passed to my Father, after he died my Mother had us divvy up the guns and I ended up with some rifles and barrels that I know little to nothing about. I hope that some of our experts here can help me to identify them before summer as I plan to sell them.
The first one might have had the stock replaced since it doesn’t have a hole in the butt for the cleaning rod, There is a stamp on the barrel that indicates that it is a Remington 7MM S.M. I think it was made in 1903.

The second is barrel only marked 45-70, serial number 42375, and with this as the patent date March 16, 1. I think it is 1873.

This one is barrel only, Remington 22RL, patent date Sept 9, 1873 serial# 5980, I can’t find any pictures on the web so I don’t know if it went to a leaver action or not.

This one, barrel only, says Marlin Firearms Patented Oct. 11, 1887 it is a 32-40

Thank you for your help, I know old furnaces and air conditioners and not enough about old rifles.[/img] _________________ 2012- 11 pigs Down.

The first one appears to be an old Remington Rolling block rifle. Probably 7X57 or 7X57R. There were literally tons of those made for military organizations.
Numbers 2 and 3 also appear to be rolling block receivers missing parts. It is hard to tell from the monitor view.
The first one might be made into a working rifle an would be a good hog gun. The rest could be used to club things to death.
I hope you find someone who can use the partial guns.

the Marlin barrel looks to be a half round, half octagon barrel, and is most
likely taken off a lever action rifle. _________________ Ban guns to eliminate crime ?

I was gonna mention bumper jack handles, tent pegs, or used as rebar also, but
decided that was obvious. Not sure if they're long enough for fence posts though.
Trot line weights ? Bundled together for an anchor maybe ? _________________ Ban guns to eliminate crime ?

I know that they are old and moldy but I am cheap and don't want to throw them in the garbage. I'm sure that with the information I've gotten so far and what ever else I can find out, some gun restorer will want to bring them back to life or Franken Gun them, something other than storing them in Davy Jones Locker. _________________ 2012- 11 pigs Down.

Paul, clean 'em up a bit, and mount 'em on a nice rustic board, AND MAKE UP YOU OWN STORY AS TO THEIR HISTORICAL SIGNIFIANCE. If nothing else, they be good conversation pieces. C'ya _________________ Billybird

I would rather try to kiss the president (God please forgive the thought), rather than try to get my wife to let me hang it in the house. I had to fight her to let me have a wood office desk chair for MY OFFICE. _________________ 2012- 11 pigs Down.

Well Paul it sounds like it's time for you to either build you a suitable man cave, or put them on loan to your local pub or coffee shop. Which ever is the most peaceful.
Or "Be A Real Man, and drop to the floor, kicking, screaming, crying and begging her to let you at least mount them on either the garage or cellar walls." (I recall a lot of homes in Ill. have cellars.) And I thought it was such a good idea. C'ya _________________ Billybird

I ran a swab down the barrel to clean the dust out of it and it ...is... perfect. You can see all six groves. _________________ 2012- 11 pigs Down.

The OAL is 26", 3/4" threaded, 10 3/4" Octagon, 14 3/4" round. All of the other Ballard barrels are longer. I wonder if the barrel was cut down a couple of inches, if that is the case it isn't going to be worth anything but rebar and anchor material. _________________ 2012- 11 pigs Down.

Heck, send it to me. I'll hang it in my man cave. I keep this place so filthy the wife wouldn't dare step inside. And I've already got my story built for my Navajo friends at the coffee shop. C'ya _________________ Billybird

Must be a microgroove and leaded up so badly you can only see 6 grooves. Yeah, that must be it. Just kidding......
You can go to Numrich and look for the value of those rifle barrels NEW. _________________ 2011 - 13

Indeed! I am sitting on a few boxes of new Marlin barrels which will never be produced again. They were made prior to the takeover by Cerebus/Remington and have the all important JM stamp and New Haven Conn. stamp on them and on some the value is beginning to jump appreciably already.

The third pic of the 22 barreled receiver is the #2 Model with Straight Bar Extractor, and is one of the more numerous models found.
