Hello Everyone,
My name is J and I have recently become very interested in learning more about hog hunting with my dogs. I have 3 female Cane Corso, they have all caught hogs in a pen a few times and 2 have caught hogs that were trapped then released in the wild. They have not ever been able to bring me to the hogs.
I am interested in making some friends that have scent dogs to hunt with. The properties that I have access to hunt are in Mason TX 857 acres and in Leaky TX 4400 acres. Both of these properties are 2.5 hours from me so I usually stay out there in a lodge or camp.
I am looking to have some teachers show me how to wrangle these menacing beasts. The first time I did this with my dogs they loved it and I fell in love with it, so exciting and adrenaline rush. I started this because it is something else to do with my dogs. Please contact me if anyone is in the areas I mentioned or would like to travel to these areas to hunt.

J, I just googled the Cane Corso, and I'm quite mpressed. Will be interesting to see how they adapt to full blown hog doggin. One question that's often raised about dogs used to hunt hogs is, "How much obedience control do you have over your dogs?" Post some pics of your trio. What led you to this breed? | Yeah the Cane Corso Mastiff is a good catch dog choice, easily trained, good disposition and a natural for hogs. Put a vest on your beast and let it go! LOL How did you get into the Italian breed instead of going with a pit or pit cross? |

I had seen the breed when in college. The wrestling coach at school was an ex-SEAL and had been stationed in Italy. When he returned home he brought 2 back or made arrangements to bring them. I had an american staffordshire terrier at the time, who was amazing. While going to school started learning about and competing in schutzund with him.
After gator my staffy died at 10 I moved to TX. I was with no dog for a year just looking around wanting to get in to protection dogs again but also weight pulling and conformation. I met a woman who eventually became my wife. We talked about different breeds and because of homeowners we had at the time certain breeds were out. She saw an episode of the dog whisperer with a 9 month old Cane Corso on and thought it was beautiful. I already knew what they were and immediately agreed we should have one. I did much research and finally purchased Giovanna a blue female, my wife nearly hit the roof when she found out what I paid for her, as they are quite expensive. The breeder that I purchased her from offers a rebate if you acheive certain titles on his dogs. Then 18 months later Tizianna was my reward for the hard work I did with Giovanna. I ended up meeting fantastic people while at specialty shows, working events and I also started a non-profit. A breeder from New Mexico offered me a pup who they thought might be a bit hard to find a home for and knew they wanted capable person to raise train and bring accolades to there kennel. This is when 18 month old Audianna came to me. |

Just a word of advice as these dogs sound very expensive and sounds like they are show dogs, often times when hunting hogs with dogs the dogs will get cut up or hurt in some other way. So I would just be careful of using your finest dogs for hog hunting. Oh and welcome to TB! _________________ God Bless Our Troops!!!!! |

Kinda stuck with the ???anna name, huh? Just kidding. Thats an interesting story, and by all appearances you've put a great deal of $$, thought and effort into your animals. I'd hook up with Longshot and go from there. I know very little about hunting hogs with dogs, 'cept be forewarned, everytime turn your dogs loose on a wild hog theres a chance of their being injured or worse. I'm sure Longshot will tune you up on this. Also, you need to keep the temperment of your dogs and the other dogs that you may be running with in mind at all times. It's one thing to have to deal with 5 or 6 dogs fighting a 100/150# wild hog. It's an entirely different story when dealing with 5 or 6 80/100# dogs fighting each other. Good Luck, hope things work out for you. C'ya _________________ Billybird

| Thanks Sam. I know it is very dangerous, but they love it so much. The oldest and youngest are show champions. I have never been able to show Tizi, she is not correct for it, nor the disposition. This girl is a real worker and is protection trained, weight pull which is why I got her. She is the main catch dog I will use. The other 2 may be done showing, not enough champions around to get to grand champ, and I am thinking about breeding eventually so I want them all to have a nice resume so to speak but I don't want them to die in the process of building it. This decision has been difficult to make but the enjoyment they get and I get is what its all about. I bring all three because I think it gives them an advantage instead of just one. They work well togethor and protect one another well. I have vests, collars, iodine scrub, stapler, blood powder, and first aid kit I bring with us. If any other items are a must have that members have found useful I would like to hear about it. |

Welcome J,
I wish you were closer to us or we were closer to you for it sounds like a lot of fun hunting. I wouldn't even have to bring my catch dog just my bay dogs which seldom ever get cut. If you ever get to come to North Texas give us a shout and we will try to help you find a hog here. _________________ The oaktreeplanter: planting for a great harvest. | I am 20 minutes north of Ft. Worth and would like to meet other hunters with hog dogs. I would like a chance to see other dogs hunt and learn the ins and outs of hog hunting. I have 3, 3/4 Rhodesian ridgebacks and 1/4 pit dogs, and a Big 1/2 Bloodhound and 1/2 Bluetick hound. They are all baying and wanting in the pen with my little 50lb hog and 3 piglets. I also have a Basset / lab mix that bays like crazy. I would love to meet with other hunters to have some friends to hunt with. Great site! Thanks guys. |
