| Darn, they light you up and you have to know a gun is behind that light, very scary. It is against the law even for hogs to run the roads and spotlight and shoot, right? |

| I know dredging up an old thread. I have a huge variety of sidearms for various purposes but I have found that I tend to carry my 1911 usually because I carry it all the time or it is in reach. I know it is not the ideal hurt hog medicine but I am very good with it and believe I can kill just about anything with it up close. My other pistol is a Ruger Vaquero in 45 Long Colt. This one pushes a 275 gr. hard cast WFN pushed to just under 1000 fps. I am more than reasonably competent with this one also and feel it has an edge on the 45 acp. Right or wrong these are the pistols I'll have on hand. Both have killed hogs but the ones killed with the ACP were done so because it was handy. The Vaquero has only killed one that was in a snare and believe it or not this was way more exciting than I expected. I think if you are an experienced gun hand and killed a lot of game (know what your doing) then your choice of weapon will generally be a good one. |

If I were to pick one handgun for a woods hunting backup, it would probably be a DA revolver in 44 Magnum.
But I think a 357 Magnum would be a good alternative as would a 45 ACP with the right +P ammo.
I know my 1911 is not nearly as powerful as my 44 Magnum SBH, but I can hit anything with it and get it back on target very quickly.
I guess in my mind, I'd keep using my 44 carbine if things went bad. |
