This fall was the first time I hunted for black bear with a bow. I carried my Dan Wesson .357 with Buffalo Bore bullets... just in case. The Dan Wesson has a 6" barrel with full underlug. It is heavier than what I really care to pack around, but if you saw the size of the bear scat where I was hunting, weight was not that much of a factor.

I'm hoping to pick up something a bit lighter that I can get my concealed carry permit with and pack around. I'm currently looking at the Glock 32 in .357 SIG.

Anyone carry a sidearm while hog hunting/trapping? Whatcha got?

I know it is a lightweight caliber but I just carry my conceal carry, a Kel Tec PF-9, very light and easy to carry.

I'll carry my S&W 629 .44 Magnum 5" tube with XTP bullets or Ruger GP-100 6" tube, or XD .357 sig. Which ever one I carry, I'm confident and well armed.

My personal favorite hog defense gun has always been my Beretta Jetfire in .22 short!

I've found over the years when hunting in hog country I never leave home without it.

While other hunters haul around heavy large caliber pistols, I don't even notice it in my pocket.

Of course we all know the first rule when hunting in the wilderness is to use the "Buddy System".

For those of you who may be unfamiliar with this it means you NEVER hunt alone, you bring a friend or companion, even an in-law.

That way if something happens there is someone to go get help.

I remember one time hunting with my brother-in-law from northern British Columbia .

Out of nowhere came this huge sow and boy was she MAD!

We must have been near one of her piglets.

Anyway, if I had not had my little Jetfire with me I'm sure I wouldn't be here today.

That's right, one shot to my brother-in-law's knee cap and I was able to escape by just walking at a brisk pace.

Its one of the best pistols in my safe!

Seriously though,
I side-pack my Glock 23 (.40 cal), because I don't have bigger caliber handgun, with FMJs. My next hang gun purchase may be a 10mm or .45 Glock with night sights as my back up pistol when hog hunting. Not that I'm a "Glock Only Fan", but Glock has proven itself time and time again to take on the dusty/dirty environment.

So then, I get asked, "Why not get a revolver for reliability vs a semi-auto Glock??"
My reply, "When under stress of a big ole sow charging you, I need all the bullets I can get!!!!" hehe

I normally carry my Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 mag. I read an article on self defense handguns by Clint Smith, operator of "Thunder Ranch" training center, I believe. He said the best gun for self defense was the one you had with you, and if you chose a revolver over a semi-auto, and thought you might need more than 6 shots, carry TWO revolvers!

i have 3 favorites i take at different times- a .357 ruger gp-100 4" bbl with 158 cast bullets, a ruger .45 acp p90 with 230 hp's, or a 7 1/2" ruger sbh hunter in .44 mag with 240 grn cast bullets. i sometimes hunt with just a pistol, and the first 2 have done great. haven't killed anything above a coyote with the sbh yet, but i am accurate with it. no opportunities yet!

Thanks for the input. I found a used Glock 31 in .357 sig yesterday in a local gun shop. It has tritium sights and 2 extra magazines for $409. I traded him my Dan Wesson as a down payment and hope to have it by Christmas.
With the mention of the .22 short, I was reminded that I have a Browning buckmark .22 that I bought mainly to shoot with my 19 year old daughter. It has pink dymondwood grips as a breast cancer awareness edition. It was a pistol I had wanted for some time with fiber optic sights and cheap on ammo. I wanted one with more "manly" cocobolo grips, but this one was on clearance at Academy sports for $100 less... same gun, different grips. Hey, I can shoot with pink grips for $100 less. Cool
I guess I think of it as my daughter's gun and don't remember it is even around most of the time. I'll have to carry it until I get my glock out of layaway.

Remember, in order to carry the .22 for a back up; it's important to have a buddy with you! Twisted Evil

I came really close on buying a .357 sig drop in for my Glock 23. I even purchased some practice rounds and HPs for it... Maybe next year...

Merry Christmas to you and good luck!

Again, I just can't help myself Crying or Very sad Laughing
be sure to file down the front sight nice and smooth, so when the bear or boar takes it from you,, it won't hurt when it's shoved up your butt.
I guess there may be a time and a need and a reason but,,,,,,

Well, I don't hunt hogs or bear for a living and never claimed to. I understand that there are more ideal weapons to hunt with and no doubt more experienced hunters, and I completely respect that. I had a 300+ pound calf running across a pasture at me full speed last weekend... I broke off a "switch" no thicker than a pencil and swung it several times in its direction. Would that switch have stopped the calf physically? Dumb question... Did it turn him around? Absolutely.
Point of the story - some deterrent may give me enough time to get out of the way or turn the animal out of the way. I don't pretend to think one shot fired in haste would definitely drop an attacking animal in his tracks, but simply having some line of defense is some comfort to me, whether it be mistakenly based or not.

I look at it pragmatically. I conceal carry most every where I go. Why? Because as they say the police are just minutes away.

There are certainly nut cases around who inflict violence on others and we read about it every day. Granted that one would likely have more time to pull their weapon and discharge it on a nutcase than on a pissed off or crazy one in 10,000 hawgs that MIGHT attack. I know there is the occasionally nut job hawg just like the occasional nut job people out there.

I learned waaaay back when to "BE PREPARED."

JMHO though.

agreed Wendell....better to have something than not have something, and 18 rounds of 10mm from my Glock 20 is defintely better than smacking something with a stick or try to fight it off with my bare hands....point is, if you do get charged by a boar or anything else, a stick or your hands won't do anything for you, except unless you decide to pray....

I agree that my pistol is as much for human aggression as wildlife, BUT, I want to shoot some hawgs with my Ruger, as well as my various Contender barrels - for the sport of it, don't expect it to be self defense.

You know what, it is sad to say, but it seems the most DANGEROUS game while hunting is the HUMAN. That has ALWAYS concerned me above all others.
Tresspassers (ARMED POACHERS), pot growers, meth cookers, illegal aliens, smugglers Arrow you never know when you'll be face to face with a pissed off "animal"". Wink
Just a word of advice, don't put down your *rifle* when a *battle* brews out Idea Wink

"Just a word of advice, don't put down your *rifle* when a *battle* brews out" You know Kevin, funny you should say that, no matter what I am doing, I tend to always have the rifle I am hunting with "ON ME", habit I guess, even though I have a sidearm ...

Kevin and Frank....yep, think you guys hit it on the head why I really carry a pistol or firearm while out and about, i've had occasions of animals attacking (bears with cubs, hogs, coyotes), but only once had to use it (walked up on a coyote I shot and jumped up while walking up on him)....but considering all the two-legged creatures out there that don't abide by the law and have other motives, I feel more secure...

I like the .357 Sig, but much prefer a SigSauer P239 to the Glock. It just fits my hand better.

welcome to the forum Bob...

yep it all comes down to what feels right in your hand, what you can shoot accurately and are confident in....for me its the Glock, but I've probably shot around 100,000 rounds or so out of the glock, so used to it and feel right for me...

I have the glock in .357 sig also in the house for home protection....

When I started this thread, I had in mind my personal situation of checking cameras, filling feeders and such rather than actually hunting. Here in AR, we do have our share of "shady characters" but fortunately have not run into these while in the woods.
At present, an AR rifle is out of my budget. I did pick up a rifle I have long wanted this summer at a pawn shop. The little beauty is a Marlin 336 in .35 Remington. The length and weight is hard to beat. On a sling it is hardly noticeable as weight goes. I killed my first deer with it this fall with 200 grain Hornady XTP bullets. For the brushy/wooded areas I have to hunt, this little rifle is a dream.
That said, I still look forward to getting the Glock out of layaway. I have been a Glock hater for years because... well... they are just plain ugly. Once I finally handled one, it fit my hand well and from the reviews I have had from a friend, it just seemed like the right thing to do...
Thanks for all of the input!

Wendell, I am just as likely to carry my Ruger .44 Carbine around doing those chores as anything else, even though I have my 9mm Carry weapon on also. Never know when a hog will step out and I always want to be ready.

Here in Van Zandt County we have had an explosion in the hog population. With that we see more and more hogs on the sides of roads rooting up ditches.
As a result I have noticed a sharp increase in spotlighters *POACHERS* taking advantage of the easy access to these animals.
In just the last two months I have been HIT with spotlights 3 times.
There is NO WAY those dudes can MISS MY PRESENCE with 3 Sendero 1500s lighting up the pastures Rolling Eyes Exclamation They still hit me with the spotlights.
Its a very uneasy feeling Exclamation
