If you had the choice of all the AR15 uppers what would you get for hog hunting, besides the 6.8?
I'm thinking of adding a new one to my arsenal but don't know what to get.

I would love to have an AR10 but that's out of the question.

I need to look more into the 30RAR. I would get a 450 bushmaster if I knew it would withstand my pvs14 ..
Just wanted to get some thoughts!

6.5 Grendel
If you are gonna keep all this up, you should start reloading too, no matter
what you get.

Colby, you wouldn't want to use the 450 Bushmaster with the PVS...too much recoil, they kick more than my .308 with heavier bullets, same with 458 SOCOM.

But realisitically, if I were to buy another upper, it would be the 450, because you can get them for just over $500. However unless you had a D-740 NV...can't do it, would have to run a light setup....but think about it, do you have lights on your feeders or a red gun light, could be your stand/blind gun?

Problem with 30 RAR from most reports (only what I read), is downrange accuracy, longer shots, but only what I read.... You already have the performance beat on the 7.62x39, so I wouldn't go that route. And you're right, the .308 needs a completely different gun, lowers are not the same....but I can bring my POF P308 out if you want to try it, I get the meat ha, not like you keep any anyways.

The 300AAC Blackout would be a choice, but slower than what you have, so the only way I recommend that is if you were going to suppress and shoot subsonic.

I have Wilson 7.62x40WT, but again just slightly slower than the 6.8, however easy to make brass for reloading and takes a .308 bullet which are readily available.

The 6.5 Grendel is a good round, you will get about 2700fps with a 120gr load and ammo is probably cheaper in most cases than the 6.8. ARP sells barrels and uppers I believe, as does others.

So out of everything out there right now, compatible with your lower, give you more umph and might now break your PVS....I would go with Burt on this one and look in to the 6.5 Grendel and see what you think. ARP was thinking of producing the 30 HRT which is faster than the Grendel, and I want one, but he hasn't done done it yet, i can get a barrel done, but hard to do.

Colonel Cooper quoted that phrase quite a bit.

I'd also spend the money on reloading gear if I were you Colby. You already have a great set up with your rifle and scopes. If you stockpile brass now it will save you quite a bit in the future. SSA has plenty of brass you can order, and the bullets are at any Bass Pro or Cabelas. You can also order through Midway USA.

might be the oppisite direction but i have been thinking about getting a heavy scoped 223/5.56 upper for plinking, coyotes, racoons, and small critters.

the reloading gear is a great ideal too.

I would suggest a .300 blackout or .458 Socom. Both can use the standard AR mags, where as the 6.8 spc and 7.62x39 have to have different magazines. I have two stripped lowers that will become a 6.8 spc and probably a .300 blackout. The major negative to the .458 socom is it kicks like a 20 gauge compared to the others.

Tommy...as stated above.. My .458 SOCOM is a destroyer on all the scopes it's worn with the exception of the current Leupold on it...It has more recoil than my 45-70's too..But I love it to death.. Twisted Evil Laughing <Sinister Laughter>

The SOCOM loads are stiffer than the loads for the Sharps and other older actions...
My 325gr FTX loads are reported to be 1850+ fps...and can go as high as 1950
That don't work with the Sharps, I know the Lever Guns can be loaded a little hotter than the Sharps loads, but off the shelf ammo is usually loaded with the older weaker actions in mind...They leave the Dynamite loads to the handloaders... Shocked Of course there are some exceptions.. Buffalo Bore, Corbon..etc..
My 405gr Rem CoreLoct projectile @ 29.5 LilGun is 1650fps...It will keep you from napping while behind the scope...Really wakes you up.. Laughing Laughing

I just pulled 2 boxes of 325gr FTX Hornady factory 45-70 off the shelf, they are both product# 82747 one has listed MV 1876fps..the other 2050...Could one be for Sharps actions and the other Lever Act ? Same item# ??No wonder I load my own.. Shocked
I got my SOCOM because I load for 45-70 anyway, but the ammo and brass for the .450 Bushy is cheaper..I just don't see flingin' pistol bullets out of a rifle..Rolling Eyes

I got my 45/70 405 gr rem sp up to 1900fps. Was hard to keep on target It didnt hurt to shoot but it had a bunch of barrel rise. I got better results at 1500 fps on the hogs. At 1900 the bullets blew right through the hog at 1500fps they lifted the hog up and body slammed them!

I started to work down toward a slower load for the SOCOM, but 30gr LilGun makes cloverleaf groups @50yd, and a smidge over 1.5" @ 100.
I couldn't make myself change it...I haven't put any blood on the end of one yet, so I may make future adjustments...Right now I've got 150 of them to test first.. Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

i'm shooting 405's out of my SOCOM at about 1600 fps...so 1900 fps is hot, what does the brass look like, primers, etc. from the 45/70?

That's interesting...accuracy? I was led to believe that powder wasn't accurate, but I wonder about some of the experts that gave me some of my load data...
Marty on the .458 SOCOM Forum gave me 35.5gr IMR4198 for a subsonic load behind a 500gr H/Cast W/ gas check..I'm not trying it...It just don't sound right to me..Rolling Eyes

4198 works great with alot of rounds out of the 458...however the 35.5 doesn't sound right for subsonic with a 500gr cast bullet

That was my thinking...seems to be one of those type loads that would result in Marty selling another Upper.. Shocked

subsonic loads out of the 458, suppressed, with a 500gr bullet though would put a quiet thumping on something Very Happy

That is my plan...My first suppressor is for my varmint getters in .22cal, but am trying to find a can for the SOCOM that can somehow be also used with my other AR's without costing more than an arm and a leg...
I hope to have my paperwork (Stamp) back in my hands before I get the new one ordered, but may have to be waiting on two if funds keep getting in line the way they are.. Shocked
I've finally started getting rid of some of the accumulated "stuff" I've piled up over the years.. Rolling Eyes so the finances are starting to look better.. Wink

The problem I'm running into is the RRA 5/8x32 thread on my .458 Barrel...If it had been 5/8x24, I could get an adapter to step down to the 1/2x36 on mt 7.62x39 AR..
Good luck finding the right one for yours!

The Hornady website only lists the 325 grain load @ 2,050 fps. Don't see two loads
showing there for the 325 grain. Could be they have changed powders at some point ?
