You hear the most interesting stories down at the local farmer's coffee spot. The latest was a guy bragging on the .17HMR as a hog rifle. Claimed a 200yd shot on a 200 plus pound hog, shoulder shot, dropped it in it's tracks. I just told him he needs a bigger gun. This is the same fella that was bragging on his one shot kill of a buck with his 7Mag at 750yds. Not saying impossible, just have to consider the source. His last remark as he left was "maybe I should go back and step that off." Ya think? I love hunting stories. Goatwhiskers the Elder

Stupid, or maybe some guys exaggerate a little ? ( Ok, they BS a lot ) Very Happy

That guy's shot is nuthin though. I took out a 650 pound hog with a single shot from
a Daisy Red Ryder, at 934 yards at night, in heavy fog, and he was on the
back side of the hill from me. Yep, did it using indirect fire techniques.
Oh, and I forgot to mention there were wind gusts from 3 different directions, as high
as 55 mph when I did it. I did have a NV scope though, that helped some.
Given the low velocity of the killer BB, the earth's rotation had to be taken into
account also....

Within reasonable range and limitations of the bullet and all that is.

I knew a guy who claimed an Elk at 918 yds. I believed him though, he was a Secret Service counter sniper.

I have no doubt on that one. Lot of long range shots have been made.
Misses too of course though.

Yeah, he actually admitted to missing the first shot. He was shooting across a valley and could judge the wind on his side and the side the elk was on, but the wind through the middle of the valley did in his first shot. Luckily he saw the bullet strike and was able to adjust for the second shot. Then he had to hike for two miles to retrieve his elk carrying his 28 lb rifle. Me, I'll stick to my short shots with my nice and light .30-06. Smile

I need to find another hog hunting forum to hang out in. You guys are in a class I will never be able to hold my own in. Most of the kills I make are no more than 100yds with my 308, which is how I like it. I did jump out of a tree stand and on 2 100lbers. One in each arm, choked em out. I knew from my stand I couldn't get the pass thru to get em both. Nice shooting guys.

The next class is known as "The first liar doesn't have a chance". Laughing
Basically, this means you should hold off on telling a big one until a few others
have gone first. This will allow you the chance to come up with the aforementioned
P.H.D. results easier.

Lesson #3 - Economics As Related to Hunting And Other Hobbies
It has been proven that girls create what's known as a negative cash flow.
Specifically, the numerous obvious, along with the hidden costs relating to
girls has been proven to severely reduce the amount of cash flow.
They also greatly reduce the amount of time available to go hunting and whatnot.
Cash flow is needed to acquire various weapons and technological gadgets, ammo,
leases, and / or properties on which to pursue the hogs, etc.

Sorry for stepping into this so late but I was just browsing old threads and came across this one.
A while back three of us went down around Ozona Tx to do some javelina hunting. One of the guys brought along a 17 hmr rifle. I thought he was nuts but the guy is military and a very good shot. Anyway, he wound up shooting a fair sized javalina, head shot,.... it dropped like a rock. So I guess we are back at the old shot placement as opposed to heavy load arguement. I won't be carrying a little bitty thing like that but I guess shot placement won this time. Rolling Eyes

We've seen videos of hogs killed at close range with air rifles also.
Some larger caliber, some small. Doesn't mean it's a good idea though.
Head shots work when the hogs stand still long enough, and all of that.
Usually anyway....I have a video of a large hog hit in the head with a .30-30 and the Hornady
flex tip factory load. Hog didn't even go down, ran off, and was not recovered.
Point is, there are stories both pro and con to the small caliber head shot approach.
We do not promote that method on this forum.

Just because a guy is military doesn't make him any more educated. Especially on the 17HMR. While our military has a lot of bright folks, it has a lot of dummies too.

I think I would need those conditions to make a 934 yard shot!

I agree. Some of the people I met while in the Army were pretty useless, but the guy I was refering to was a ex ranger and is now a instructor at Xe (formerly Blackwater) training center in N. Carolina. He trains SWAT teams as well as military counter terrorist. He has been to the mid east many times as military and as a support bodyguard. He definately knows weaponry. He just took the 17hmr because it was a new rifle and he wanted to try it out.
