I decided the best way to learn was to just get off my but and the net and go do it! Called my buddy got GPS number of where he pulled a hog.
Great time! Found what I believe to be a wallow
Lots of scat, and I believe a bedding area
Went out at dusk, and sunrise. Saw fresh tracks and feces. Kept the light breeze in my face. Stopped every 50' or so and just listened At one point in heavier brush smelled strong feces, but never heard a sound. I assumed I would hear a hog. Did I miss one here? Quick recon trip just made me more excited.
Any advice?
(working on posting pics here, sorry)

That GPS should be helpful in keeping track of the hog sign. Keep track of that info!! You can start baiting a spot over time to get the hogs "trained" that there is an easy meal at that spot. If you have a game cam you can use that to track their feeding times to maximize your success. Get a TB Feederlight of your choice and spend some time in waiting and they'll slip up sooner or later. _________________ NRA LIFE MEMBER

Hey Mike, welcome. I`d guess corn would be cheaper ? Maybe try burry some in post hole, make `em work for it. Something like corn, they seem to always want some, pretty easy to get & probably about the cheapest.
Good luck. We`re looking forward to your sucess pics. _________________ life member N.A.H.C.

| Hi Mike. Glad you're hooked on the sport. I just wanted to tell you that you might be going at this all wrong. You just almost can't walk up on a hog, unless he's asleep. For the most part, they hang out in the thickest stuff during the day and it's almost impossible to get up on them. I'm a long time bowhunter and tend to move really, really slow in the woods while hunting and I've never walked up on hogs. Lots of deer, but not hogs. Put out corn or something for 3 or 4 days and see if you can get them to come to you. Feeders work best. |

Thanx for the pointers STRONG. Sure appreciate the help from you guys.
My buddy who gave me the GPS got his hog at 0630. I heard the boogers last time at about 3AM. Next time
I just finished putting together a hog pipe. (thank you guys for that info). Plan going with the .308. Maybe attempting to track to a bedding area in the AM.
Thanks ya'll for being so hopeful!

Your methods of hunting will depend on your location (terrain, water, and hog population).
My first hog was taken on a friend's lease a few months ago by stalking, but that was only possible because of the large number of hogs in the area and proximity to a water source.
At another location about 25 miles away, the hogs are not as thick and very hard to pattern. The location is up on top of a ridge, but I think the hogs bed down off the sides of the ridge. I've spent hours (sometimes all night) sitting out waiting at different feeders with my RPG feeder light with nothing to show for it, but this weekend we rode up on a sounder while riding 4-wheelers. Went back to the house to grab our rifles and ended up finding them at the next feeder. So far, every hog that we've killed at this location was stumbled upon. We've yet to have one come to a feeder while we were sitting there waiting on them.
There's a lot of great info at this site, but ultimately you have get out that learn what the hogs at your location are doing and adjust your tactics accordingly. Good luck! |

That's a really interesting statement and it really got my attention. There is lots of questions I would like to ask
In general, if the hog sign is STRONG at a feeder, and you sit on that feeder and don't see anything a hunter should STRONGLY EVALUATE their tactic. You're doing something that is giving your presence away:
It could one of many things!
Activity during the day, well before your hunt even started could ruin your set up. Too noisy duringthe day, too much roaming around or driving around. Sometimes all you have to do is approach the feeder before your hunt and it will ruin the hunt!
Maybe setting up TOOOOOO CLOSE.
The SET UP itself may make for a totally impossible hunt! I've seen it 100 times!
Make sure you are NOT set up in a funnel where your noise and scent is INSULATED. Make sure the set up is not in a swirling breeze or COOL AIR SINKING trap (at night cool air, and your scent, sinks down hill).
Generally speaking, "night time set ups" should be in OPEN AREAS if at all possible.
There are 100+ things to avoid,, some day I'm gon'a make a video,, I've said that for ten years _________________ KEVIN RYER

Good point, Kevin. I've made more than my share of mistakes over the past few months (since I started hunting hogs). At this point, my list of things not to do is much longer that my list of things to do. I'm working on it.
I didn't mean to say that sitting at a feeder was a bad idea -- just that the hogs on this land don't frequent them as often as other places. They may show up only once a week at a random time, and it's a crap shoot trying to sit at a feeder to catch'm red-handed...or red-hoofed. So far, we're more likely to kill them by just stumbling up on them.
Having said all of that, the land owner killed 3 hogs this morning from his front porch. They were coming up to his protein feeder by the house. He'd kill one, and they'd keep coming back! Wish I had been there!
Needless to say, I've got a lot to learn, but I was trying to share my experiences so far. Next I'll try not to sound so authoritative. |

Can you elaborate, as far as scent dispersant tips/rule |
