I can testify that all the gear you need can be rented right there in the bait shop at the head of the pier Sam.

I wish I would have known you need equipment earlier as I have more than any 8 families should be allowed by law to have.

They do have anything from trout gear to surfcasting gear for a fairly reasonable rate.

Well Sam , with the surf conditions from Alex hitting Corpus by Wednsday , it looks like you should be able to hammer on the bull Reds in the surf . Find the freshest Mullet heads (yes heads) step on them to get the juices flowing, put a hook thru it and let her rip. Fish the incoming tide on the bottom . Big surf weights and big rods. If you can't cast them ask somebody fishing the pier with big gear to help you learn. I hope you get this , and take pictures. P.S watch the under tow , it will kill you. Don't think that wearing a life jacket is for sissies.

To late Alex is already here, my dad and I went out last night with light gear from home (bass rods on 10 and 12 pound test) we are only about two miles from Luby surf pier. We fished near the bridge you go over before you get to the pier cause' their were a lot of birds over baitfish. We only got to fish for about n hour and a half. We fished croaker and shrimp but the shrimp were to small so my dad caught five little things, but no trout or reds. I caught one keeper trout on the croaker. But we had a lot of fun for our first time wade fishing. We might try and go fish after the storm(we are here till saturday) what would yall recommend?

Thanks, Sam

Sam , the sooner you can get out on the pier the better. The big surf puts oxygen in the water and triggers the spawning of Redfish. Also the surge in the tide carries the eggs into the marshes where the fry(small hatchlings ) will live in the protection of the marsh grass. Once a redfish reaches around 30" they leave the bays and spend the rest of their lives in the gulf as brooders and hardly ever come into the bays. Hit the pier with fresh cut mullet or shad . The shad tend to get soft and it will fall off the hook .

Well there isn't near as much wind as yesterday so we might go out today. I don't know if the pier is open though.

Sorry yall just got home. Well we end up going yesterday, which was friday. My dad is now addicted to wade fishing so we went back to the same spot with live croaker, my dad caught a 20 or so inch trout but it got off at the last second. He also caught a 19 inch red the min. is 20 so we threw him back. THe thing that was killing us though was the crabs. The eat probably about 70% of our bait. We would reel in a croaker and part of it would be gone or a crab would be hanging on to it. But we did end up getting two crabs that we ate and they were very good. I will post pics soon. All and all we had a good time though. I think next time we will put the but up higher so that the crabs can't reach it.

Doggone it Sam... Crying or Very sad

Sorry to hear that bud.
Next time use a popping cork with a 3' leader below it, thats where the trout and reds feed primarily.
The crabs will have to tread water to get to the bait.

Sounds good. I can't wait to get back to the beach, now I have to wait a whole nother' year. It's alright time will pass quickly. I was even thinking about using a cork then decided naw, sure paid for it though.
