Well, I was given a boat on Sat
My dad owned a boat business growing up on the coast, always had boats around. He got out of the business when I was in junior high...

About 15 years ago I helped him rig out a nice little fishing boat, my parents live in New Braunfels now.

It's a 16ft Monarch welded aluminum boat with a slight v bottom to it, 40hp Yamaha, trolling motor, carpeted wood deck, etc..

I have had access to it ever since and have taken it out numerous time with the family fishing, camping, etc..

Well, my dad is in his late 70s and is no longer superman.
They aren't using it and it's just been sitting in his workshop.
He called me on Sat and told me it's mine, they aren't going to be using it anymore as they are worried if one of them was to fall in the other couldn't get them out..

So, I am very, very happy to have it, I don't like the reason I got it, not one bit!

My dad used to go in the rivers at night alligator hunting, he could barefoot ski, we went all over south Texas and even down into Mexico fishing, offshore fishing, we lived on the water or on a deer lease.

It's kind of sad to me. I would much rather he want to keep using it and me borrowing it a few times a year...

But, he said he knows I will use it and the grandkids will love it..

Well I bet if you took them fishing and they fell in you could get them out. I bought my dad's truck from my mother when she fell out of it and wouldn't drive it anymore. I know what you mean by bitter sweet.

I truly feel your inner pain Charlie, but remember that you are now responsible for continuing the legacy your dad started in and with you.

One day the same thing will occur for the next generation of Cokers and you will be more than pleased to do it, just as I am sure your dad is at this time.

So now you are the SUPERMAN and you can be the guy to make the fishing trips happen and the safety issues wil not be a problem... Wink

Your story brought back happy memories of my Dad. Some painful ones as well, but way more happy ones. I lost him in 1998 to bone cancer.

For years I'd find myself reaching for the phone to call him when I faced I problem I didn't know how to deal with, only to remember that he was gone. Now, my adult kids call me whenever they have a problem they don't know how to deal with. The circle has turned.

Ray said it pretty well. We have to take the place of the generation that went before us, and somehow find the strength and the fortitude to be the kind of example to the next generation that our fathers were to us. The legacy has to stay alive. The next generation don't have our memories, so we have to build new ones for them.

I'll agree its bittersweet. And you know what, it always will be. That's the way it's supposed to be. I only hope we can make so many good memories for our kids that it's bittersweet for them too. If we do, then maybe...., just maybe, we'll have lived up to the legacy that was left to us.

Thanks..
I agree and that's one of the reasons I am so adamant about taking them hunting, fishing, camping, etc..
it's the fun of the moment of course but it's building those memories that will last a lifetime

my fondest memories of childhood are going hunting and fishing with my dad, brother, uncles, etc..

I want that for my kids, those are what I want them to remember, not what level they got to on some stupid video game.

Don't laugh at me but I have never heard of ammoogo, the only gunstores in Brenham I have seen are a place called gunworld, and another place just called "custom gunshop". Thanks for all of the compliments, but I really dooon't want to be the president Wink

Spend as much time as you can with him. You can still take him or them fishing you know, you will be there. Either way, enjoy what time you have left with them. I miss both of mine so very much for sure.
Look at this way if you may. At least you have something to carry on the tradition with. enjoy it with him and something you can always remember your Dad by too.

Bittersweet indeed.

I also inherited a few firearms from my father now that he isn't as mobile as he once was and his eyesight is going.
