I don't know much about hog hunting. I went on my first hog hunt about a month ago (got one, about 30 pounds).
But I was thinking about staying out all night next time, and thinking about wanting to have a thermos of coffee, or maybe hot chocolate for my son. My first thought was it would be bad because it would stink. But then it occurred to me that you guys put jello mix, soda, and anything else sweet smelling on the corn to draw the hogs.
The more I thought about it, the more I thought it might be a good thing to sit up in the tree stand and pour myself a cup of hot chocolate. It should smell as nice as the other sweet things you guys pour on your corn. Wherever the wind carries my scent, it will carry the much stronger scent of the hot chocolate too.
What do you guys think? |

Welcome Joe
As far as the scents go, try to keep the wind in your favor, and you'll always do better.. As far as the coffee, and cocoa, you will never find Ray Gendron or Carl out after dark on stand without a thermos full...Just carry a large sealed disposable jug for you and the son for collection purposes..

Welcome to TexasBoars Joe.
Any hog that gets downwind enough to smell your hot chocolate will almost certainly have already smelled you. Their sense of smell is excellent, I think better than a deer's. So, drink up with your son, I don't think it'll make any difference.
Good luck,
George |

Ahhhhhhh, the secret to your hunting Carl! Mt. Dew and coffee...........CAFFINE!
Welcome to the site Joe.
As stated, it wont make that much difference for by then they have already smelled you and/or the coffee. May as well enjoy and no sense in doing without while in the stand.
KEEPS YOU AWAKE TOO!! _________________ Just my 2 cents worth with a nickel rebate.

Hey there Joe...
Welcome to TexasBoars and the FORUMS
Coffee is a must for me while in the field as well as Big Red.
I was set up awaiting a crew of trap robbers in the s/w cor of one of the properties Gene farms.
The night before there was a whole sounder stolen and I was waiting on their return for another round of theft.
While sitting in the back of my truck I poured a cup of coffee and lit a cigarette.
I was parked about 8' from the fence and a 300 lb boar came between the truck and the fence.
Did'nt even seem to notice anything at all so I decided to take advantage of this and let lead fly.
I say do it bud.
Coffee, Hot Chocolate, Big Red, Mountain Dew for you and your son...
GrimReaper for the piggies

Drinking a lot of any kind of liquids might make you a little uncomfortable after a few hours in a blind. If you have to climb out of a elevated blind to take a leak it could kinda mess up your hunt. Human pee probably has a distintly human smell, I'm just guess at that though! When I know I'm stuck out there for several hours I try to go out with a empty bladder. Usually by the time I get back to the cabin or someplace away from my blind my bladder is about to bust!
Of course age may have something to do with it, a problem some of you young guys may not have.......yet. |

| Got a friend who's told me time and time again this old timer he's hunted deer with for years never hunts w/o a cigar in his mouth and he's killed some good deer. He's either an air bender or deer (maybe hogs) have an affinity for a Cuban cigar. |
