| Having always been a fan of metric cartridges (more for conversational reasons than ballistics), I couldn't seem to talk myself out of buying a new full stocked CZ's in 9.3x62. I've shot a few hogs in my time and I'm sure it's more than adequate. I was just wondering if any of you gent's have used or had any other experience with the caliber. |

I have a .22-250 CZ 550 and the SST is awesome! _________________ NRA LIFE MEMBER

I have not used it, but after looking at the numbers, it's as good
( or maybe a little better ) than a .35 Whelen. And that I have used on hogs.
It will do very well.
I can also tell you a friend of mine used the 9.3 x 74R on a hog, and
it stomped it right there. This round is almost identical in performance
to the 9.3 x 62, although you may have known that. _________________ Ban guns to eliminate crime ?

I've shot exactly one pig with my 9.3x62, about a 125 lb sow that was in poor condition. I was using the 286 gr Hornady bullet and hit the pig right behind the shoulder in a high heart / low lung hit. The range was about 70 yards and the bullet punched a clean hole right through the pig. We found lung tissue and a blood trail and the pig itself about 50 or 60 yards away.
My takeaway from the experience is that maybe the Hornady 286 is a bit tough for the smaller pigs. I'm in the process of loading up some 285 gr Prvi Partisan bullets and will try them next, as they have a reputation of being softer than the Hornady soft points. The Speer 270 is supposedly the softest of the bunch, and I'll try them next, if the Prvi bullets are too hard and don't expand to my satisfaction. Bear in mind that I'm drawing conclusions from a sample of one, and my load was very moderate and likely had a muzzle velocity under 2300 fps.
The 9.3x62 is considered the "go to" round for trophy boar in Central Europe, as I'm sure you're aware. My rifle started life as an H&R 330, which is a FN commercial mauser in disguise. I installed a 3 position M70-style safety, put in a decent trigger, and replaced the barrel with a 25.5 inch Lothar Walther. It's currently in the cheap Hogue stock, which I actually like quite well, but I might upgrade it at some point. I'm not sure how I got into the project. It certainly would have been much more sensible to buy a CZ 550 as you did, but I like the end result, so it's all good.
My goal in putting the rifle together was to have a larger bore rifle for night hunting, so I've got a Nikon IR scope mounted and a night light set up. Ironically enough, the one pig that I've bagged so far was shot in daylight. _________________ analog_peninsula

Finally, RL15 and Ramshot Big Game are considered to be the very best powders for reloading, with Big Game getting the nod for velocity and RL15 getting the nod for availability. _________________ analog_peninsula

My friend used the Barnes 250 grain TSX bullet, and it was very destructive.
Shot was 80 yards.
Barnes also makes a 286 grain. _________________ Ban guns to eliminate crime ?

This is a caliber that I have a LOT of experience with. I have spent 4-6 weeks in Africa the past 5 summers hunting exclusively with my 9.3x62.
I have several 9.3s from a stock CZ 550 to full custom and they all shoot really good. If there is such a thing as an "inherently" accurate caliber, this is it. Seems almost any bullet/powder combinations shoots OK. However I finally settled on two loads:
286gr Nosler Part and R-15, F210
286gr Barnes TSX and R-15, F210
I get good reliable expansion with the Nosler even on smaller game even though it penetrates deep. It is also the most accurate bullet in my rifles. I have never shot a hog in the US with it, but I've shot close to 50 warthogs/bushpigs with the Nosler and it just works!
I have shot everything from Jackal to Zebra/Wildebeest size game with the Nosler and Eland to Cape Buff with the TSX. Accurate and deadly!!!
However if I was going to hunt in America with it I might try the Speer 270gr and the Barnes 250gr TSX.
Graf (PRVI) and Lapua brass is the best. Norma is expensive and doesn't last very long.
I haven't shot any game with it, but the factory Serbian PRVI (available from Graf in MO) shoots really good.
My favorite rifle is a custom job built on a Ruger 77 MK II
21" PacNor med weight bbl
NECG banded front sight and express rear
Barrel band swivel
1" Decellerator pad
Glass bedded and bbl floated
3# crisp trigger
ArmorTuff polymer satin black finish
Topped with a Leupold VX III 1.75-6x36 HDPX in Warne QD rings
It looks like a 3/4 scale classic African express rifle and handles GREAT!
See my comments on the 9.3 in the new edition of the Barnes reloading manual which basically say: Kicks like a heavy load .30-06 and kills like a .375 H&H !!!! _________________ Bill Wilson

Thanks for the info. I've been shooting handloaded privi bullets for a few weeks. The things a tack driver. I figured the full length stock would impede accuracy somewhat, but I happily stand corrected. If it hits as well as it shoots I may just have a new favorite. Don't tell my 6.5 |

Trust me, any halfway decent placed shot with your 9.3 will put whatever you shoot down...............
Elephant and Rhino are the only two animals on the planet you would be a little undergunned for.
I shot a 180# boar tonite with a 165gr PRVI PSP out of my .308 (42.5gr R-15), in the neck out the shoulder DRT hog!!!!
This bullet shoots as good or better than Sierra 165gr SBTs in my .308s and .30-06 with the same powder charge. _________________ Bill Wilson
