I can't find anything written in this forum by looking at the subject lines, so I'll ask the question...

Is it safe to feed dogs any part of a feral hog that has just been killed? The hoofs or some part that you're not planning to use yourself? Or is the risk of various diseases too great to jeopardize the dogs' health?

dave i been runnin dogs all my life and we've allways rewarded dogs . if you field dress it in the woods a piece of hart never hurts . as far as parts of the hoof and all i don't unless it's been cleaned and boiled or smoked . hogs do carry all sorts of stuff transferable to dogs and humans .if you get into the habit of rewarding the dogs in the field just be sure you're on a good worm regiment of at least once a month all year long .

I'm thinking more about bringing some things to the doggies waiting at home. I know you can't give dogs cooked bones, because they will splinter. I don't mind feeding my dogs raw chicken drumsticks from the grocery store, but I just wonder if it's safe to give them a feral hog rib for instance. Uncooked.

And yes, I keep all our dogs on Heartgard. Anybody in Texas should keep their dogs protected against heartworm, because the one company that was producing heartworm treatment has stopped making it, so any dog that comes down with heartworm is SOL. About 15-25% of the dogs we rescue from shelters have heartworm, and we're going to have to let most of them be put down now.

For years I gave all the leg bones from deer and hogs to my dogs. I also saved the livers for them, as well as any connective tissue I took off while boning them out. Dogs loved the stuff, and I never had a problem. But, my current Labrador retriever wants to swallow everything whole, and the Great Dane has a sensitive tummy. Between the two the wife was cleaning too much dog puke off the floor, and said no more. Now, vultures clean the bones, and the neighbor's dogs sneak into the pasture at night to carry off the remnants.

i have a couple big chest freezers in the shed and 1 of them is filled with pork for the hounds.. cuts down on the food bill and they love it!!

I don't own dogs, but the link above recommends feral hog meat being thoroughly cooked before consumption by animals or humans to avoid infections such as Brucellosis or Pseudorabies which is always fatal to dogs.(Pseudorabies)

Just be mind full of the liver, if the pig is caught off country that is heavily sprayed with pesticides/herbicides etc they will end up in the pigs liver, was a great feed 150 years ago, not so much these days...
