First post here so first off I'd just like to say something to my fellow Americans in Texas......If we could all be like Texans, the world would be a better place Smile

Down here in the Florida Everglades we get mosquitoes the size of birds and been getting some documented cases of Dange Fever.

I have thermacell and I am pleased how well it works, but since I've been using it, I've been getting less activity around my stands.

Since the hogs are a scent savy they must be smelling the Thermacell right?? (granted if the wind is your enemy)

Whats your opinion?

You mean Dengue fever, right ?

Anyway, welcome to the forum.
As for the Thermacell, I can't recall anybody around here saying that
might be a factor. You hunt at ground level ? If so, maybe an elevated stand
might help ?

If the wind is not in your favor, the Thermacell will be the least of your problems.
If it's in your favor, there should be no risk of detection based on any scent I'd think.

Thanks for the replies, yes I meant Dengue (got to love autocorrect on iPhone) Most my hunts are at ground level, I too have not heard anything negative regarding Thermacell.

I've used them here in Missouri and had same problem, thinking the scent pools out more than normal if this makes sense?

Might have luck with Insect Blocker Clothing and Netting.

Right now we are dealing with Deer Flies,Mosquitoes,Ticks and Chiggers.Other than them its Snakes.

I noticed recently an advertisement for earth scented Thermacell replacement cartridges, and may have seen them at Academy.
I'll post it if I can find it!

I use the Thermacell extensively while hunting. My bow stand sits within 50yrds of the Brazos river in Brazoria county. Trust me when I say the mosquitoes will pick you up and carry you off. This past bow season I used it by placing it beside me on my ladder stand. The stand sits 15ft in the air. I saw deer each time I hunted, many of them were right below my stand. I never had a deer spook on me this bow season, which is a first for me. I also never had a problem with mesquitoes all season, until I shut the Thermacell off and got down from the stand to retrieve my deer or go home. Then I was bombarded by them. To say I'm pleased with the Thermacell's performance is an understatement.

Fwiw, I hunted each weekend of the season, and not any time during the middle of the week. So, perhaps, the break in between helped my situation a bit. I love hunting without being bitten by mosquitoes or nats.

I saw that earth scent at bass pro and it made me question the original scent. It seems to me earth scent might be worse.

I guess the key to it is you are better off in a stand greater than 10-15 feet. I might start off with a more efficient shirt, pants, hat, ect. with a greater thickness. I'll use the thermacell as a last resort.

Does anybody here have a suggestion on mosquito netting?

I used headnets for many years here along the gulf coast, and they are a pain in the butt. You can't see as good. The mosquitoes will buzz your ears , eye's, and nose, even through the nets. I hated them. If the nets touch your skin, the skeeters will still get you.

I use Thermacell all the time I am in my ground level blind and would not leave the house without it. I have had hogs walk right up to me and not detect it. In total darkness, you can also use the tiny bit of light that come out of the top of the unit as a flashlight.

DO they smell the THERM O CELL?
If they can smell it with it working right beside you, then, they can smell you. Period.
The alternative without THERM O CELL -- while sitting in infested areas!!!
If you think about that in its most simple form,, what question is there?
If you have the wind in your favor, as you should, its no bid deal. If the wind is not in your favor (?)

I love thermacells. Have seen and shot many animals while using them. Its either thermacell to have a nice hunt or "off" which they smell for sure. And with out either they will see all the motion fromm swatting all night. Thermacell is a must!
