my son and i had been checking the feeders and hog tubes all week and planned to hunt Thursday night. i knew i had to work Thursday but i thought i would get out early. they kept adding on cases but i finally got out. while at a work, a storm system blew through the area where we hunt. i get home and load up and head to the lease (15 minutes from the house). we move stuff to the hunting buggy and head out of camp. i hit a hole coming out of camp and blew a ball joint. we shift everything over to my friend's ranger and head out. we get to our area and find that the tube was full and corn still on the ground from last night feed. we put on the hunter alert sensors and get comfortable in the stand. minutes later the national guard helicopter (usually flies on tuesdays) start circling the lease. he finally leaves right before dark. usually there is events that happen for a good hunt. first the birds then the raccoon and then the hogs. well, the birds show up but then a flock ducks coming flying in and start eat but the helicopter scare them away. right after dark the raccoon comes so things are starting to look good. it leaves and a hour later the hogs show up. the problem is there was about 15 of them crowding and moving under the feeder. my son was having trouble getting a clean shot on just one. one finally gives him a shot and he squeezes the trigger. (click) misfire, after reloading he hit her a little far back but she reared up like a bronco and hit the ground and never got up.

there is a small airport by the lease that the military helicopter practices take off and landings but they usually fly on Tuesdays. one of the lease caretakers told me stories about a helicopter one time coming down on stands to see if they could blow them over. i once had a leer jet take off and fly was just over the treetops and scared the hogs away from my feeder. |
