My buddy who helped me build my 6.8 said to dry fire it before putting it away. What do you say about that?

The only thing that it would do to dry fire it would be to "relax" the hammer spring. I basically feel....why not "relax" it, but------------?
One of the things that I have always hated about the AR operateing system is that you cannot select "SAFE" unless the action(hammer)is cocked. But it is what it is I guess. --- Bill S. _________________ "Why just dance when you can rock and roll"

Agreed, that takes the tension off the trigger system, compared to having the
hammer locked back long term. That is what the guy was getting at.
Whether or not it's really needed might be a point of debate, but might as well. _________________ Ban guns to eliminate crime ?

I practice the same thing, although in a debate, I'd argue that it helps much. Point being the valve springs on an engine can sit for years, some relaxed, some compressed, yet if all else is well, it'll start up and run fine. But as said, I to ease the hammer down on all of my guns when I store them.

I prefer to store firearms with any springs relaxed, but try not to get into the habit of dropping the hammer by dry firing if possible.
It has been many years since it happened, but I was almost a statistic in the matter of empty firearm accidents..
A close friend was clearing his duty weapon before starting to do a cleaning, and after removing the mag, and racking the slide, jokingly pointed his 1911 at me, and gave the ol', draw, I'll make you famous...then pointed at the TV showing the news and promptly blew the nightly newscaster into never - never land...We were both completely and utterly sick, glad that we were both alive and swore to never let foolishness of that type enter into our relationship again. My friend has since passed away from Cancer, and shortly before he went, apologized again, and asked for forgiveness of the events on that day...We were at peace with each other when he passed, and I think back on it when I see people mishandling firearms in stores and at ranges...
I know that not all firearms can be put into a hammer down state, or disassembled without dropping the hammer by dry firing, but you ought to see me looking and checking four or five times to make sure it's clear before doing so..Always take care, the life you save may be someone that is loved and will be missed..

it is best to either dry fire or open the lower and relax the hammer by hand. The spring already had tension on it, and even though the springs will last a long time, they will lose their force over time, the same with magazines springs, etc....so best to relax them a little more to allow them to last longer....the spring still has tension on it in the relaxed position, but relieving some when not being used will make them last longer

So the dry fire doesn't harm the pin as with other/some guns? That's really what I was after.

No, it's fine when assembled, just not when the upper isn't on..it will damage the lower..
