I shot Mr Big tonight....BUT only wounded him I think.  I was in the BrokeBack stand and climbed down.  As I cleared the brush and into the open they came into the Monster feeder.

I had brought the Trigger Stix in case I jumped them on the way in and just left it hanging on the ladder until I climbed down.  It was too dark but I could sorta make him out and after a couple of minutes he was clear.  Just before I shot that voice in my head said "Wait and they will come down the road in a few minutes and you have the feeder light on PIR."

I shot anyway!  Like a dumbass but I was soooo excited.  He took off to the north the way they came in and the others lit out up the hill to the south and circled around to the west in the brush and I had hawgs running by me. Heart be still!

I heard him bellow and do not know if he laid down and died or I just pissed him off.  Anyhow he is too dang big for me to crawl around in the brush after.  I will likely go tomorrow and see if I can pick up a trail.

I am pissed!  I had the .308 MX literally in my hands but put it back in the case and pulled out the trusty .444.  The Minox scope on the .308 MX would have been much better for the situation but I put it back because the reticle is not lighted.  It gathers much more light than the Burris FF 30MM LRS but I expected them from 6:45-8:00 and not dark as they have been regularly showing up way before dark.  Rolling eyes.

He is by far the biggest boar I have seen in three seasons on the lease.  No doubt in my mind he will go over 350# and he keeps getting bigger!

I went out at noon today to eliminate the long shadows. Hawgs had come in this morning I saw on the camera card and it took no pics of the boar and sounder last night so I must have dreamed it. I found where he was digging in as he left out last night and followed his BIG, deep tracks the 30 yd into the woods and after two hours of circling around in the 8-10" deep leaves without finding him I decided to check the sight in on both rifles

I did find my rifles BOTH needed sighting in though. In the winter I sighted em in one day when the wind was blowing like 40 mph. The 444 was shooting 4" high @ 100 so if I hit him I just parted his mane. The longest shot I have had to take on this year's hawgs has been under 40 us so all have been DRT neck shots. I feel so stupid and have educated a nice boar. But I am a bit More educated myself now. If he hasn't left for the next county and I see him on the camera pics I am ready to try him again now but likely will wait a couple of weeks before I try him again.

I wrote this hoping it will help someone out the not to make the same mistakes I did.

Dumb Old Dave

Everyone makes mistakes Dave, at least you had the opportunity to shoot at it and you did hit the pig. Next time you will not second guess yourself and you'll take the right tool for the job.

Well. Well. I pulled the camera cards this morning while doing maintenance. THE BIG BOY IS STILL HERE, bears no visible gunshot wounds and half the times he shows up during daylight!

When I get him do I still get credit for shooting a stoopid boar? lol

Oh yeah, both rifles are putting their Boolits/Boolits into 1" @100 yd...NOW.

You might have hit him in the head, given it a concussion, and now he just acts like an automaton. Same thing happening in the NFL to football players.

If I were a New Orleans Saints fan I would take offense. Razz
