Over the last month or so, I have had a nightly visitor from a pretty decent boar at my place in Canton. A buddy of mine issued a challenge at me to try and trap this boar versus shooting him as I usually do. I do quite a bit of trapping so I figured it would be a good project for me and my 11 yr old son right there at the house. I don't usually trap big pigs over 200lbs, I personally think they don't like touching gates/doors/or panels with their back - so I built a large guillotine door with that in mind. We would watch the trail camera and when he would get comfortable with a section we would build another section. I finally set it a few days ago and last night.... "WHAM" my guillotine door dropped and he was trapped! Very Happy My son and I proudly took a few pics this morning to boast to my buddy and backed away from the trap because he was pounding the trap as they usually do. I sat on the deck 300 yrds away with my son talking about the importantace of patience and hard work and achieving something when you put your mind to it..... we watched this big boar pace back and forth and suddenly JUMP OVER THE 5FT PANEL. Shocked If you have never seen a pig jump a 5ft fence, it is quite impressive, even from 300 ft away. He almost cleared it but his back legs hung for a second... just a second... then he was gone. Crying or Very sad

Here are a few pics of the events over the last month. The next pic of this pig... if he returns.... will be hanging from a tree with a bullet hole from my .308.

Don't shoot him. Those jumping genetics may be valuable!

Think of all the money you could make with a sounder of jumping pigs.

Ron

Now, if you could get them to fly and replace Bobwhite quail ....

yea... a little funny looking back it. I sure was upset though yesterday morning.... maybe a little shocked too I guess. I have checked open-air traps before that were sprung, had fresh dirt toar up from a trapped pig and I could only conclude that a pig climbed out or jumped out. I always go with a round design so jumping was usually what I suspected.... but there is something different about seeing the big 'ole boar, taking pics of him, getting all excited about it and then watching him get away Evil or Very Mad ..... there I go working myself up again.

To tell ya the truth I don't know what I would have done with him anyway except put a bullet in him. My buddy who has the trailer we use for selling them to the buying station was out of town.

Guess it was meant to be.

I ran into a jumper last summer up there.
He caught two bullets in the shoulder. Each time he jumped I hit him in the air.
That was fun. Twisted Evil
Kevin, Patrick, and s10 were there when it happened.

It happens if you trap much. Cut you a couple panels lengthwise and add some height. Leave top section loose at top so they fall back in. Great job getting a mature hog in the trap. It aint easy. I had 6 150#ers feeding in the trap every night last year. Set it and nothing but a bent top next morning. Haven't gotten a picture of them since. I got a hauler but I don't know if I would care to load that guy.
