Man I know my stash has nothing on either one of you guys! I need to buy more and soon! I probably only have about 150 rounds ready to go and 120 or so waiting to be loaded.
I have to make a trip to Mesquite to get some AA2200 powder that's supposed to be the cat's meow for 6.8. Been waiting to do that before loading the rest of my primed brass! |

David, I've loaded about 100 rounds with the RL-10x and have had good results; haven't loaded RL-7 or AA2200.
All the 6.8 guys rave about AA2200. So what can you tell me about your experience with AA2200 and RL-7? |

FFL Got the lower ready( Spikes) , upper is here(stag arms), everything else came in, going to pay for the lower and put it all together tomorrow. Buddy told me to get the Burris xtreme xtra high rings for my scope, not sure about the height but he seems to think these will work, hope to try some different rings before buying.
Got 6 boxes of the SSA 110gr Barnes TSX and a variety of mags, already shipped, so i am almost ready to hit the range. |

That works for me as I can use my current AR lower. I've seen complete composite lowers as cheap as $129, so that gets you a full-running 6.8 spc for a pretty reasonable price (at least until you start shopping for optics). I think 26 round magazines are about $35 each. Good luck! |
Jon where did you find the .62 a rd ammo? You know I got that Stag upper and also bought the composite lower $99.95 delivered not sure what I am going to do with it but a friend got one and has 100 rds through it, no problems. Maybe a composite upper in .223? Got my mags and hunting ammo on the way. |

Hello all,
Frank you may want to think about building your own AR-15 or AR-10 it is very rewarding and you get the gun you want. I just finished a 7.62x39 AR-15 and it is a shooter with 0 feed or cycling problems at all. But I would not use it for pigs over 150 yards it just looses to much energy to be reliable after that. In fact I do not think you can get any caliber out of an AR-15 past 200 yards to have good enough ballistic or energy to do the job of killing a pig reliable. The only round that may come close to working would be the 400 WT at 2400fps. I would certainly never go smaller than 7.62mm no matter how much powder you put behind it in an AR-15. If you go bigger than 7.62mm the bullet drop after 200 yards is drastic with the heaver bullets you should use.
Now what should you use a heaver 7.62mm bullet out of an AR-10 if the AR is what you are set on and that would be my choice, but AR-10 are heavy. If you build your own, you can rig and tune it to your liking. Now with that said I must tell you I own ARs in 9mm, 5.56x45mm, 7.62x39mm, and 2 ea 7.62x51mm and think about a 358 Win upper for my AR-10 lower.
Live long and stay free!! |

Ed, I have built 6 AR's 2 6.8 and 4 5.56 sold all but 1 and use my 6.8 to hunt hogs and deer out to 300 yds. SSA Barnes 110gr TSX.
I decided not to do a 7.62x39, the hunting ammo is more than the 6.8 and the russian ammo is un predictable. A buddy has taken many hogs with his .223 but that was not the way i wanted to go, Love the 6.8! |

The .30 Remington AR is in the AR-15 platform, and is pretty much a .300 Savage
in performance. Load it with a 130 grain Barnes, and that might get interesting.
Even a 110 grain Barnes might get interesting.
All of this is covering ground we already covered in this thread some time ago now though. _________________ Ban guns to eliminate crime ?

Folks,
Sorry to get in so late on this thread. I've been reading some of these threads with interest, because I've been toying with the idea of building a 30AR just for possible longer shots. I've been using a 7.62x39 16" upper for the last couple years, with very good results....but I have not shot any pigs over 180 yards with it, either.
I started out using the WW factory loaded 123 grain sp's, mainly for the brass. Then I loaded the 123 grain Hornady sp's over RL 7, and my groups shrunk to MOA. Pigs died! Then Cabelas had a closeout sale on Barnes 123 grain M/LE TAC-X bullets, and I bought several hundred, loaded them with a book max. of RL 7, and they shot MOA!
What a difference the Barnes bullets made in the effectiveness of the 7.62X39! The 180 yard shot mentioned above was with the barnes bullet on a 150# class sow that dropped on the spot! 99% of our shooting is at night.
I've killed three boars in this past week, 180#, 105#, and one almost 250 on Friday night. The 105 and 180 were complete pass throughs....both pigs were close to 100 yards away when shot. The larger boar, had the bullet lodged under the hide on the off side. The little one dropped DRT, the others never went over 35 yds. The big one was just over 60 yards away when shot.
the 180 # pig.
the 105 pounder, exit side.
One of my hunting buddies has a 6.8 and another has a Grendel, and neither seem to put the pigs down as well as the 7.62.....BUT I'm attributing that to the Barnes bullet, and larger caliber, nothing more! They are both using plastic tipped Hornady bullets.
I'm still thinking of the 30 AR for better ballistics, rather than the rainbow trajectory of the 7.62x39. I'll just have to find a good smith to chamber it in a premium ss match barrel, and thread it for a flash hider so it doesn't mess with my D740, even though it is gen 3 and autogated, the flash hider keeps it from "blooming out"
Just my experiences, no arguments intended.

I use the 6.8 with the 110 Barnes TSX, never had one move after being shot!
You are doing it right w the 7.62 hand loading, using better bullets, getting accuracy and killing power. The CorBon is a great rd also, before I got rid of my 7.62 that is what I was using but too expensive when not reloading yourself.
Congrats! |

In my experience, that statement applies to a lot of rifle cartridges under .338 to .35 caliber. _________________ Ban guns to eliminate crime ?
