Just got back from TX last night, had a blast on my first hog hunt. My guide told me this was "400+", but after looking at pics of the 400 pounders on this sight, I know he's not even close (if I was the guide I would have said 800+). By looking at the pics, I would say he's well over 250, maybe over 300 - I'll let you experts decide where the pics should be.

Five things...

1) Welcome to TexasBoars!!!! Very Happy
2) Congrats on the pig!!! Very Happy
3) Link to second pic doesn't work Sad
4) A guide that has no scale to weigh harvested game is automatically
suspect in my brain Confused
5) If you fall into the average American male weight of around 200 lbs, then I would say, yes, that looks like it's around a 250 lbs. Smile

Here's another try on pics:

and the cutters:

I'm a whopping 150 pounds, 5'6" with my boots on.

Pics work....

Nice cutters

You weigh 150.....after re-eval, I'm gonna guesstimate that pig down to around 200 lbs. Still a nice size pig.

WTH is that rifle!?!

Could that be a Druganov? If it is, that's just wild! In a good way, of course.

Either way, good pig.

Quick reference estimate of a hog's weight.

Formula used to estimate:

Heart girth is measured in inches using a cloth measuring tape. The tape is placed directly behind the front legs,
wrapped snugly around the heart girth, and read directly behind the shoulders.

pig weight = 10.1709 x Heart girth (inches) minus 205.7492.

Found to be 95% accurate to within 10 lbs

Using the above formula, we get the following:

40 inch = 200 pounds
42 inch = 220 pounds
43 inch = 230 pounds
44 inch = 240 pounds
45 inch = 250 pounds
-------------------------------
46 inch = 260 pounds
47 inch = 270 pounds
48 inch = 280 pounds
49 inch = 290 pounds
-----------------------------
50 inch = 300 pounds
51 inch = 310 pounds

55 inch needed to get around 350 pounds

That's the infamous Romanian PSL - a designated marksman rifle. Designed to reach beyond an AK, PSL translates to "Scoped Semi Auto". About 10.5 pounds, usually great for long shots - terrible in the failing light though. Uses the same 7.62x54R as the Dragonov, but that's about the only resemblance. Dragonov or SVD is a roller-lock recoil system with a milled receiver, the PSL is basically an oversized AK47 (which uses the 7.62x39 the commie .308). Stamped steel receiver and a giant piston to drive cycling. Same receiver as the RPK full auto. It's a blast to shoot - but not really a "primary battle rifle" for hitting running pigs. The rifle has recorded kills up to 1300m, and unfortunately is often used by our mid-east enemies. I trained on this and the Dragonov (and many others) in the Corps.

The scope is the original PS01 4x, with a distance drum on the side - just turn it to the desired distance and fire dead on. Unfortunately the trillium activated recital has long-since depleted - so no glow in the dark.

Back in the day, a couple Speznaz guys I trained with used the PSL/RPK receiver, and the Drako 10 inch barrel and pistol grip. Essentially a 30.06 pistol! I may build one in the coming year just for kicks.

I can't say that I know jack about hunting rifles or shotguns - but I can yack all day about the military stuff.

Those are some great cutters on that hog, but I am in agreement with Toro on the weight. I would also say around 200#. It is very easy to over-estimate the weight of a good sized hog and an "eager" guide might do so to accordingly increase the size of his tip. We call our scale the de-liar.

Crying or Very sad

A quick measurement reference - the PSL rifle is 30.5 inches from the back of the magazine (by the trigger guard) to the end of the flash suppressor.

Drawing a measurement line on the pic from the nose to the tail of the pig - he's almost exactly twice the length of the section of the rifle that can be seen (mag box to suppressor). So 61 inches is a safe measurement of the hog.

Wish I had thought to lay the rifle on top of the hog for better reference.

Yeah, I didn't have a clue how to measure the heart. But at least we have an estimate of the size of the hog.

Jon, the measurement they are talking about is girth around the heart, not length...

Hey John,
That's a heck of a hog!! Looks as though it could very well be a pure Euro!
This particular forum is a brutal reality, in regards to the weight of wild hogs, to a lot of hunters who are actually BRAVE enough to post up their photos and kills.
I would say well over 70% of the photos posted in these TROPHY FORUMS get moved. Shocked
That IN NO WAY should be considered an insult or disrespectful to ANY PERSON who posts their photos. Nor in any way should it take away from the thrill and excitement of a successful hunt!
YEAH, the hog is most likely 3 yrs old and probably weighs between 200 and MAYBE the outside chance of squeezing in at 250 pounds. WHICH IN REALITY is a GOOD SIZE HOG!
You have a "GOOD SIZE" hog to be proud of Very Happy
If that hog were to have reached 5 yrs old it would have been a true BEAST worthy of any recognition.

Laughing Laughing Well it's one of those days up here in the Four Corners, the winds blowing a gail and the wifes back at work after being off a week for spring break. Soooo, as I usually do when I'm bored, I started THINKING.
This is when I found that Kevin had made some changes to the "Trophy Class" hog weights. And that's when I got the brilliant idea of comparing MY waist line to the formula used to measure hog weights. So, belly button to belly button, my girth is 44", which translates into 240#s on the est. hog weight chart. Two weeks ago I was at the doctor and they weighed me in at 233#s. Laughing Laughing Now I think this is quite ironic. And I have since thrown away the bathroom scale and replaced it with a cloth tape measure. Laughing Laughing
The way I figure it, if this works out to be fairly accurate on people. I could win a few breakfast at my local coffee shop, by guessing people's weights with a tape measure. C'ya Very Happy (Probably only work on Old, Fat people like me, though.)

I wasn't trying to argue about the weight. When people ask I just tell them "my guide said he was 400+" so I'm not acutally lying... ...just a little BSing for fun.

I will say this - after showing the pictures around, everybody I know is dying to get to TX and hunt hogs!

I'm already shopping night vision scopes for my next trip. I have 97 pounds of meat in the freezer I need to eat up first!

Nobody took it as an argument here. No worries there.
And next time you know how to check any hogs you get.
Even a 200 -250 pounder is very respectable.

You did good by posting the photo. We always like discussing and guessing the weight on hogs.
When you get another one,, we would enjoy it again Very Happy I'm sure you would enjoy shootin' another one for our entertainment Wink

That was a tusky jasper for sure. How'd it go down after the x54r?

I wish I'da read about measuring girth before I got mine. Something (tape and chart) to put in my kit for next time. (in addition to a scale).

Thanks for all the info shared here.
