a good freind/hunting buddy are fixing to do a minnalist backpack adventure through davy crockett national fores, we will spend 5 days. ive already got gps corrdinates for water sourses, our plan is to go on the 4c hiking trail in ratcliff Texas and hike the 20 miles to the bluff outlook on the neches river. our plans are to go extremely light bare basic provisions. we will dehydrate some things and compact ultralight fishing gear will go with us. and of course my snake bow. ive got my pack sitting at 10 lbs right now im going to take a little water, but my plans are to take a few bottles of water.
so now ill get to my question what system to i need to purify water because i paln on using nartural resources, looking at a pump and filter system that weighs 3 0z

Dave you wont get any signal out there lol 160,000 acres no cell phone at all my gps has satelite texting so i wont be completely out in the dark lol i just need a good way of purifying water without boiling need to come up with a pump and syphone system as i dont feel like carring 2 gallons of water

i would go with the katadyn, they've been around for a long time and good reviews, there are similar ones out there for less money but I don't have any experience with them

I carry the magnesium fire starter also in my pack, I have the military version that I got from some guys in the service, works great....

how are you guys camping, sleeping? depending when you go, could be cold...and of course have to deal with bugs, snakes, etc. I would also carry a mini tent and sleeping bag, i've camped for a week in the winter when I was young, 3 feet of snow and a canvas tent, amazingly stayed fairly warm with a good sleeping back and insulating on outside of tent with snow...can't say I would want to do it now though lol

Good luck, my idea of camping is a holiday inn or a 35' motorhome at this age...lol

i hiked 10 miles with a 40 lb pack yesterday normally walking ill average 13 to 14 minutes strolling along, in the hills yesterday i averaged 21 min a mile with the pack was a good workout

While in Iraq I had some special forces guys say thank you to me with one of there one man sleeping tents. This thing folds up into a package the size of a watermelon. It weighs about 2 pounds and when assembled it turns into a small banana like kacoon that elivates you 2-3 inches off the ground or you can tie it to a tree. It has a zipper over the top too keep the skeeters from your blood. I was really amazed how small and lite weight this was and what a great idea someone came up with for our frontline troups.

mine is a small bivy tent weighs 1 lb it wanst but 2 months ago i weighed 268 felt horrible im down to 235 and feel wonderful ideal weight would be around 200 but im in good enough shape to hike 10 miles anyways

i got my pack sitting right at 22 lbs less food, im working on dehdrating some portions of food. i have my 2 liter bladder filled and 5 bottles of water. im going out tomorrow to hike 5 miles in and cashe some water , then friday ill hike 5 miles the other direction closer to the end. so all in all we will cover a minimum of 40 miles in 4 days. i didnt go as minimal as i wanted as i added a fishing pole and a storage container of misc tackle. im real excited about traveling through big slough WMA

looks like you will need a porter to carry your stuff! lol Should be fun, I am guessing you are going to shoot something that is in season with your bow?

ma im a pretty strong guy, ive been hiking 10 miles a day with the pack up and down the hills and did 15 yesterday fixing to do another 10 miles in a little while but our plans are to shoot some rabbits along the way we will be going reight through big slough WMA which is loaded with hogs, i doubt we will have an oppurtunity at hpgs cause we will be making alot of noise

Take notes, enjoy God's great outdoors and come back and write Howie's Great Adventure. Oh yeah... Make sure your buddy does NOT have on new hiking boots or it could get nasty. :]

When my lil bro was in HS he and a couple of his buds hitch hiked all over and ended up at the Grand Canyon and hiked down to the floor. My lil bro has such bad blisters they hung around down there for 3 days begging food etc until he could hike back out..LOL. He sure had some good friends.
