Looking into the two on a marlin xl7.
Any disadvantages between the two?
Whitetail and maybe a hog or two out to 300 yards?
Set aside ammo shortages.. _________________ 2011- 055 Confirmed Kills

| I think ballistically they are close to the same, so I would go with the .308 due to cost of ammo and availability and if you end up reloading the .308 brass is readily available and cheaper |

I've seen new .308 brass get hard to find at times the last few years.
Been that way on and off with a lot of reloading components.
Still, the .308 is a little more common. Nothing wrong with either cartridge.
The 7mm-08 is a modern version of the 7 x 57 ( 7mm Mauser ) pretty much.
Load data and factory ammo probably faster than most 7 x 57 stuff though, since
some old and weaker action 7 x 57 rifles are still out there. _________________ Ban guns to eliminate crime ?

The rifle sure looks like a Savage clone.
Do a Google search on Marlin XL7 review _________________ Ban guns to eliminate crime ?

The Marlin sure is priced right. .308 is awesome on hogs and deer. _________________ Keep your pants and powder dry! |

Yes it is. And the .260 Remington is a .308 necked down to 6.5mm, and the .243 Win.
is a .308 necked down to 6mm ( .24 caliber )...
Neck it up to .338, and you have the .338 Federal. Go up to .358 diameter, and
you have the .358 Winchester. _________________ Ban guns to eliminate crime ?

| Knew about the other "children" of the .308, was just suggesting that at least the theoretical powder capacities between .308 and 7 mm - .08 should be close to the same, main difference being bullet weight and diameter. |

Your question gave me the chance to tell others that might not know
about the connections all of those rounds have to each other though. _________________ Ban guns to eliminate crime ?

It's probably one of the better "budget" rifles out there. I wouldn't call it a Savage clone though. It does have a barrel nut (yes, you can interchange with Savage barrels with a little thread machining) and an accu-trigger type trigger, but it also has a Remington-style safety and the barrels are made by Marlin. The stocks suck and you will probably want to find a Boyd's or some other type of aftermarket stock. I have an XL7 in 270 that shoots very nice groups.......under .75" at 100 yards with 130 Hornady SP and IMR 4831. I think you will be happy with one!
By the way, you are looking for a XS7, not XL7. "S" stands for short action and "L" stands for long action. |

The over all appearance of the rifle is closer to a Savage than a Remington.
There, how's that ?
Besides the barrel nut and the trigger, the bolt design is much more like
a Savage than a Remington also.
Three main features of the rifle's action "look" a lot like a Savage.
But no, it's not a clone. haha _________________ Ban guns to eliminate crime ?

| Burt, I understand what you were doing. That is good information, just like the various rounds made from a .30-06 - although not as many - like the .270, .25-06, .35 Whelen. One really good cartridge can spawn many more. |

Both calibers are great choices for hog hunting, but my personal nod goes to the .308 since it's so versatile and has so many good bullet choices. If you don't handload, get a .308 and some Federal Fusion ammo and you will be good to go! _________________ Bill Wilson

If your not 100% sold on the Marlin ck out the Tikka T-3, we have sold a LOT of these and everyone has been really happy with them. They are one of the most accurate bolt guns out of the box I've ever seen. I've personally go them in .270, .308, .30-06 and .338 Fed and they all shoot VERY good. Best value in a quality bolt gun in my opinion. _________________ Bill Wilson

I looked at the T-3 very closely before buying my Savage .308. That Tikka looks like a very good value and a nice light bolt-action rifle that would be perfect for stalking. |

I hate it when threads like this get started...
My neighbor came over showing off his early Christmas Gift from the wife...A Savage 110FCP HS in .338 Lapua, then he produced the 10X40X56 SightMark scope and the 20MOA base and rings that go with it...
Just ordered my scope, but in 8X25X50..(lower budget here) and will be ordering mine in .300Win...I hope to be able to get the rifle ordered before the first of the year.....Now just to figure what needs to go..eeniee meeniee minee mo who's the one that's got to go???
Thanks guys...what's next, my Harley?? NOT!!

Sorry I got here late. I love the 7mms. That said I think that for ranges under 200yds the 308 using factory 180 power points is perfect!! capt david _________________ 150gn 7x57, 165gn 308 Partitions or, 308 180gn Power Points, not a better pig load anywhere! |

I got out a little cheaper than my neighbor...I bought the Sightmark 8.5-25x50 scope, and his was the NightForce Scope..out of my price range..
I've done pretty well in the last week liquidating assets from 35 years of collecting "stuff" and hope to have my Savage shortly after New Years..
