i am new to hog hunting and i love it thus far. i have been using the ND3 laser designator and it works ok but i have been looking at the Pulsar N550 for a while. my question is does it really work good for night hunting and do i need additional IR light to work with it. i dont want to spend the money if its not worth it. i would be mounting it on my 450 bushmaster. thanks for any help.

Hmm. A 450 bushmaster might be a problem with the recoil. Does it have more than a 308? I use one on my 6.8 and I like it
Here's some good videos
http://www.texasboars.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=21311

I've killed 5 so far with it.

I was out last night and I covered a 50 acre hay patch without the IR and it's a dark moon. And the IR comes with the scope anyways so it doesn't matter if you need it, you'll have it and if you don't you can just keep it turned off.

http://www.youtube.com/user/jeffadurham#p/a/u/1/gWtCj1oBUQw

that scope is mounted on a .308...i have both the .308 and the 450 Bushmaster, the 450 kicks similar, maybe slightly more

Well what I'm saying is the 450 still going to be under Pulsars warranty if something goes wrong with the scope.. And if the scope even will hold up to it

It's always good to use bigger guns at night (for Burt, 375 during day and 20 mm cannon at night! Laughing ) but the 6.8 will do great, I use the 110gr TSX and a guy named Huey uses the 120 SST with great luck.

Not true !
I use a 20mm during the day, and a 40mm at night - with the option of
pulling out an 88mm in case a large group shows up. Shocked Cool Laughing

Remember "Johnny Dangerously" Burt? "It's an 88 magnum...shoots through schools..." Makes me think of you now. Laughing

When I was looking at my n550, they told me it was good up to .50cal. Whether they were lying or not I do not know. So far it handles my .308 just fine.

Congrats! Your like the 7th or 8th one whose got one on this forum! I was out the other night with mine and I spotted some hogs about 200 yards away, killed one at 30 yards then one at 75 yards and the last was 150, all DRT with the 6.8. I forgot my IR in my bag and could barely see them when I saw them. Just wait tell you look through it with a full moon!

We'd like to see some pics of your set up!

Went out with my n550 in total darkness. It works real good at 30 yrds with no IR. If I used the IR I could see to shoot out to about 80 yrds. I could see a power pole out to about 250 yrds with IR on. It is storming here so no moon and lots of clouds. Im am really impressed with it plus it beat spending 3500.00 for gen 3. This is going to work great cause I will be hunting in swamps so my shots wont be long range.
