|
|
| My birthday is arround the corrner and my girlfriend wants to get me an AK had one as a kid and loved it. But now I'm torn between the AK and a 6.8 upper for my M4. I will be reloading for which ever one I get. Whith plinking rounds the exception for the AK. Plus for the AK a whole new weapon. With the 6.8 only get the upper and my girl usually carries the M4 when we are hunting because it's light. Which ever one I pick will be fixed with an eotech and used for nightime hunting with the NVD's so most shots will be well within 100 yards. Usually I know exactly what I want and right now I'm very torn. Any pros and cons you guys can come up with let me know. |

| Ok I just thought of another pro for the AK. Seems that they are getting harder to find and they are more likely to be banned in the future vs the 6.8 upper which is starting to be accepted as a mainstream hunting platform. So it may be easier and cheaper to get the upper in the future vs the AK. Thoughts? |

My thoughts? Dont get a DPMS. There are higher quality companys out there for not much (if any) more $$$.
The only thing DPMS i would buy is a in-spec lower....hard to mess that up.
If i were to get an AK i'd buy a Saiga from atlanticfirearms and convert it myself. I think they run around 350... |

Like I've said before, as much as I love my AK47, I'd still opt for the 6.8SPC upper. The only downside is the up-front cost. Otherwise there are no reasons to choose the AK47 in my opinion.
If you're looking for an AK47, then check these guys out. I've bought three rifles from them in the past and they've been excellent to deal with. They are a reputable place.
I bought the Romanian Military Variant AK47. It's awesome. I got the shooter's package for an extra fifty bucks and I think it was well worth the price.

ak's are fun to shoot....but only one advantage to them, they don't jam much....but we're not talking war here
that being said, the AR platform is much more accurate than 'most' ak's....the 6.8 is a great round....
i would go with a 6.8 upper |

| Accuracy at 100 yards of 1 MOA to 4 MOA won't matter on a 100 yard pig sticker. The x39 will make a bigger hole, will probably be more reliable(good thing when you miss, and they get pissed), ammo is cheaper, ammo has been around longer, on more countries in more continents, and you are more likely to find x39 than most other calibers if the SHTF. Only thing that comes to my mind is can you get the accessories you want mounted to the AK? |

| I still Plan on getting an AK at some point but their prices are inflated right now and for hunting I think the 6.8 is going to fit what I was looking for well. A small light package with more umph than a .223 the TSX .95 should be good most of my shots at night are less than 100 yards and really less than 50. And if it dosent get them on the first well I'll have 20-25 more to back the first one up. I'm talking with Bison Armory trying to get a nice custom upper. Looking forward to shedding the 18lb rifle. |

I guess you mean the M-14.
But you have to admit, you killed the daylights out of them with it. _________________ Ban guns to eliminate crime ?

| Actualy most of my kills where with my 45/70 then my .223 M4. The m14 has only claimed about 200 but it's catching up fast. If I was just hunting for big boars I would have stayed with the guide gun. But That's not what we are doing it's a numbers game right now. |

If that 7.62x39 by Galatiin can be used, then you get the AR quality and lower priced ammo with a 308 bullet mass. Personally I like that idea for a short(16"), light rifle with a heavy punch.
6.8...115 gr...2575 ft/sec....1694 ft.lbs...Cost/round $1.15
7.62x39...123 gr...2400 ft/sec...1529 ft.lb...Cost/round $0.18 _________________ 2012- 11 pigs Down.

I'm already committed to the 6.8 at this point bullets brass and dies are on the way to my house. Going to try the 85 and 95gr TTSX's since most of my shots are pretty close the 85 is looking good.

| No worries. As long as you know what is going on with it. Too many people have gotten burned at gun shows with the wrong twist or wrong chamber for the ammo. I read about the problems and wrote off the caliber for the x39. |

| Thanks I was concerned about that also. I called Bison Armory and actualy got to talk to the owner. I told him exactly why what and how I planned on using it and he is putting me one together. "Our uppers are made from the best components made by American AR-15 manufacturers. They will shoot MOA or better out of the box with quality ammunition, and they will function reliably, guaranteed." |

If you are happy and feel informed with your purchase, good luck, and drop all you can, unless you are hunting near me, then I hope you miss them all and scare them my way. |

I'm a fan of the 7.62x39 if anything for the cost.
Accuracy is going to suffer with AK's and SKS. I know they make uppers in 7.62x39 but I can't comment on its accuracy since I've never had my hands on one.
Finally the cost factor... Nuf said. _________________ http://www.youtube.com/user/SpecialEd309

| You will like the 6.8 and ben from bison is a great guy and very helpful. My upper from him is just under moa with most loads I've tried and better than that with some of my handloads... and it kills pigs much better than most would think |

I have a RRA 308, what would I need to buy to convert to a 7.62x39? Would I be able to use the lower and mags? _________________ 2012- 11 pigs Down.

i got the 7.62x39 upper and it shoots like a charm. i've downed my 1st and 3rd biggest hogs with this platform. i fell in love with this caliber when shooting my SKS.
Accuracy is beyond my expectations.... (i no longer worry about 2" groups as I did with my SKS this thing shoots where you point it)

308 is AR-10, and 7.62x39 is AR-15, different lowers, and then different uppers. You would have to buy a different lower to run an AR-15 upper. |
