We got our first black bear here in WNY. This thing had a inches of fat on the hide and inches more on the body. Makes sense as they have to go thru winter hibernating. What I was wondering is, if bears down south hibernate or have these layers of fat to make it thru the winter. Thanks in advance.

http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/landwater/land/private/agricultural_land/tp2010/Appendix%20N%20Black%20Bears.pdf

It states "In west Texas bears do not enter a true state of hibernation during the winter. Instead, they enter brief periods of denning."

I've seen black bear year round in Eastern North Carolina. I had read that they don't hibernate in all regions as well.
