|
|
| Well I came back monday after filling up all the hog toys and feeders, doing some bow hunting. The night before I left the hogs were on the hog toy 50 yards from my stand. Since this is opening weekend and the rut is happening we are all noise conscious trying to keep our deer as relaxed as possible until the big one steps out. The scheme is that after the evening hunt I will stay in the stand and wait for the hogs to show up, then shoot one with my 44 magnum carbine which is much quieter than my 30-06. I will be using a 250 gr. Semiwadcutter on top of 21.0 grains of IMR 4227 which is a not so loud load. This gives I guess 1500 fps out of my rifles 17.5 inch barrel. Should I shoot for the neck/spine or will this load do ok if I run it thru the heart/lung area without hitting bone? Suppose sunday I decide to take a doe home and use this rifle, is a heart/ lung hit okay? |

I would think that your load would be great for hogs and overkill for deer. Heavy bullets and relatively modest speeds are devastating. _________________ NRA LIFE MEMBER

I think you are better off with the neck / spine shot on the hog and that
bullet.
I used 240 grain softpoints on deer in a .44 Mag carbine,
and got instant knock downs with those.
The cast bullet will be fatal on the deer too of course, but
I think they might run some.
( I've seen deer run when heart shot with high speed rifles even. ) _________________ Onward Through The Hog ! |

We use 44 mag and put it at the base of the ear. It usually severs the spine and they are dead before they hit the ground.
Remember the shot must be accurate for it to work the best.

yep, my load is 255g Keiths at about 1250 or so, they have gone completely through the shoulders of 2 hogs I have shot, neither ran more than 50 yards...
should be fine! |

When he said heart / lung, I
envisioned a shot behind, or low behind the shoulder.
Having done that, I then said neck / spine is better.
Now, if you get a solid shoulder shot, that would
do ok too, as coker said.
The guy on the place next to me hit 3 hogs at different times
with low behind the shoulder heart shots. He was using 165 grain
Nosler Partitions in a .30-06. He recovered one out of three.
The others ran 100 yards or so, got hidden in heavy cover.
He didn't find them until the buzzards found them for him. _________________ Onward Through The Hog ! |

I too say neck/spine, less meat wasted. _________________ Paul Marx

| To me a chest shot on a hog is aimed at it's "elbow" or slightly above. On a deer it's right behind the shoulder in the middle of it's body. At any rate I will get something this weekend for sure. |

| Just might of jinxed myself. Got there friday after a long day and a 4 hour ride at 11pm. went around and topped off all the hog toys nad sat on them till 3am. Hit sack get up at 5am go sit in stand till 10am. Get on fencing, cow finding and counting, work on windmill then go to cabin and talk, play poker, drink a couple beers and eat, go to stand at 4:30 pm, sit in stand till after dark, around 8pm several hogs come in and I take aim but am in bad position, tired and not shooting the rifle I am used to shooting, my 308 anyway it goes off before I am ready for it and I miss the hog. My hunting partner drives up, gets out and pukes for 10 minutes due to an overdose of Clan Mcgreggor scotch foisted upon him by unscrupulous poker player. We go in and Steve hits the sack to get some glorious Z's from his snoring and I stay up till 9pm playing poker. Got up next morning and killed a doe with a beautiful running shot. |
