|

I just got the December 2009 issue of Handloader Magazine.
The bottom half of page 33 has an ad for Lee Reloading gear.
The ad starts off with the question "Why is there an ammo shortage?"
They then show an industry web page.
Headline: "Winchester to deliver 200 million .40 caliber rounds
to Homeland Security". ( Over the next 5 years. )
And of course that doesn't count any other caliber, or any other
US Govt contract - or foreign contracts for that matter.
In the October issue of Guns And Ammo, there was a short
article reporting that Speer has a 4 year contract with France
for 4 million rounds of 9mm....so, there's a couple of things
to consider anyway. _________________ Onward Through The Hog ! |

This does shed some light on the issue. I do think that the fact that homeland security is ordering that much ammo is a little disturbing to me, but I'll leave off any conspiracy theories for now.
For now I'll just say that you can't out-hoard the French and US governments. Who'd a thunk that the french can't manufacture their own ammo _________________ NRA LIFE MEMBER

The 9mm rounds will be using the Speer Gold Dot hollow point.
The French don't have those..... _________________ Onward Through The Hog ! |

Sierra is saying something else. Here's the key paragraph, but read their whole article:
| Quote: | | For 2009 our military and law enforcement business, is only slightly higher than what we had predicted, and is not causing these shortages. The shortages are being caused by the huge increase in demand from the individual reloaders themselves and also by the OEM ammunition reloaders who are reacting to the same increase in demand. |
Sierra won't say it, but I think it has more to do with people's fears of Democrats running Washington than it does with increased law enforcement/military orders. The shortages just compound people's fears, and the problem keeps growing. It's a vicious cycle.
PS - My first post! |

They only need enough to load their weapons once. Evidently, a fully loaded weapon makes a better "thunk" noise when thrown on the ground while surrendering. |

I'm sure that's part of it, but it's hard to ignore the information
I found and posted too.
Many have said it's the panic buying that's the cause.
I say this explanation does not hold water after almost a
year of shortages. You can not panic buy what's not there to
start with......I have been able to find primers twice this year.
I got 5,000 large pistol, and 1,000 small rifle primers in the
course of this year. Not exactly a market draining amount by any means.
If you do any amount of handgun shooting, 5,000 primers is not
an unreasonable amount either. Handgun ammo goes fast.
The pistol primers were bought way back in March at that.
Two dealers I know have seen no more of them since...... _________________ Onward Through The Hog ! |

| Burt do they show a history on the amount of ammo ordered by the agencies? Has the amount increased over the past year or do they normally order this much each year? |

That I don't know, but I do know a certain agency has
been having trouble staying supplied with .40 S&W ammo this
last year. I assume they are trying to compensate by placing
larger orders, thus hoping to stay ahead of the situation. _________________ Onward Through The Hog ! |

I'm going with the Conspiracy Theory Ed! lol
Obama is buying up all the ammo so we can't get out hands on it! haha
That really wouldn't surprise me one bit! _________________ I just neutered my cat.....now he's a liberal! |

One thought is that the training work-ups and in-theater use of all kinds of ammo is done with mini-guns and anything else that can shoot in full auto. Bet if the truth were known the consumption rate by military now is way ahead of what it was in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam combined. _________________ Have a nice day, unless you’ve made other plans. |

I disagree. Full auto use was widespread in Viet Nam.
I also think it was a higher intensity war than now.
At least loss figures would seem to indicate that.
There was no shortage stateside during that time frame
like there is now either.
Mini guns - a friend of mine flew Cobras back then.
Early miniguns fired 5.56mm, and carried 8,000 rounds on those Cobras.
He often times went through 3 or 4 turn arounds in
a day. That's a lot of 5.56 ammo burned up - by one guy in one day. _________________ Onward Through The Hog ! |

| On the military channel they were comparing the sniper to the reg infantry. Said it took about 3000 rds per kill for the infantry. 1 for the sniper. Thats when they figured out one shot one kill method of thinking. Cheaper to better train the men with there weapon. There was a lot of ammo being used to blindly shoot into the jungle. |

| Thats not that much ammo when you put a calculator to it. The 9mm is one container full. The homeland rounds are spread out ever years and will more than likely be used at the range for practice. The military over here uses a lot of ammo to simply test fire the weapons prior to there exits from the camp. Each convoy has 4-5 gun trucks and each one test fires before leaving with at least 10 exiting a day. They still have 50 or so camps spread out over Iraq and they are all sending gun trucks out everyday. I think this shortage is a bunch of whooie being used to drive up the price. |
