go fishing, talk to the other fisherman, see what they are using...find what works for you....

My most favorite lure of all time, so much that I have a stockpile of them and I still pick them up if I happen to remember when at academy or wherever....the Storm Wildeye Curl Tail Swim Shad in the Firetiger color...I tend to lose them frequently.....(which reminds me of a fish story...I don't think I told it on here...let me see if I can find the pics...you will not believe it...)

then get you a small pocket size plano box to throw your creekin'/wadin' stuff in and just start fishin and walkin the shores....

white mr twister curl tails always in the box too

Hey Howie, good to see you in here man, some of us been wondering where you at and all. Now we know. Laughing
Get Rattle Traps, chrome w/blue back and in the 1/4 and 1/2 oz. Its a good all round lure for white bass, black bass and striper too. They will catch a stump quick so you may want to get two of each.
Artificial worms are a blast Howie. Various colors for various times of the year as well as different lakes are a must. If I was over at Lufkin, Sam Rayburn would be where I would be at. Best Lake there is, although over fished during the summer months due to big tournaments on it all summer.
I started salt water fishing about 15 years ago when I can. Did this after fishing fresh water all my life. Salt water fishing is a blast and interesting to say the least. Treat all salt water fish as though they all have teeth cause MOST DO! Laughing
Give me a holler on one of your days off. Maybe I can take kinfolks pontoon out over here in Trinity side Lake Livingston.

little white curl tails and maribou like white and yellow jigs is what I have always used on crappie/white bass....minnows seemed to always work the best, at night with BRIGHT lights.....hmmm....I wonder if I could make a floating led/cree light for this...hmm....

Time to go to Granger!

I can see it now - Howie at the creek, armed only with an ultra light - and
a 375 pound boar walks out of the brush..... Shocked

Howie would snag that hog with that 4 lbs test line and hold on for dear life! Laughing
Crappie are good eating but I dont have the patience for them anymore.
White bass when they are running/spawning is a blast and will wear you out catching so many! I have caught many a white basss on a roadrunner (white or yellow) w/chrome spiiner blade, spec rigs with the combo white and yellow (not solid white-white or yellow-yellow cause they hit different colors on different days, this way you will have one that probably works).
And caught many white bass on rattle traps!

If the sand bass/white bass are biting, you can add more jigs to your line. I usually don't do more than 3, but you'll have a blast catching 2 and 3 at a time. Just tie one about 6-10 inches above the bottom one. It's hard to explain it, but you basically make a loop and tie it off so you have about 3-4 inch loop and then you stick it through the eye of your jig so it rides out to the side a little. Does that make sense?

Mine aren't as fancy as the one in the link above, but you can get the idea.

Howie, I grew up fishing the "Oakie Hole" on Rayburn, certain bridge piers, and an under water bridge for crappie.
Our house was close to the Cassells-Boykin state park boat ramp, on the Zavalla side of the lake just west of the bridge.
I can not describe how to find the Oakie hole, but could find it if I was there.
We always sunk brush piles at peirs #25, 55, 93 and 127.
The underwater bridge, is to the east of the big bridge, on the Zavalla side, east of the largest peninsula on the map.
Once you clear that peninsula, you can see the old roadbed coming out of the forrest and we would just get in line and watch the depth finder until we got to the chanel.
That is when we knew we were on top of the bridge.
Never had any better luck than with a gold hook and minnow, always in the oxygen level from 17 to 23 feet.

best way to fish for crappies, minnows. I love jig fishin but you just really can't beat sittin on the bank, with a minnow bobber and a cooler full of that will give you a headache the next morning. Them crappies howies, best eatin fish you could ever possibly fry. Good Luck!!
